Wow! What a start to the year. The children have worked extremely hard this term and settled well in to life as Year 6 pupils.
By looking at our central idea, which was mainly focused around the arts and how it influences people's expression and how people communicate through the arts, the children have started to understand the importance of the arts throughout history and how it has evolved.
They first looked at a modern version of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein'. They used their descriptive vocabulary to rewrite the story of Frankenstein and the Monster, changing the ending. They then used AI to create images of the monster from the story, using their descriptions from their narratives.
From this we then looked at monologues in modern films and texts and compared them to Shakespeare's monologues and sonnets. The children then wrote their own monologues and performed them. They also recorded their monologues and uploaded them to Google Classroom, where you will be able to view your child's monologue at the start.
For our final piece of work this term, the children researched the impact of music on society through the 20th century. They researched Blues, Rock and Roll, Pop and R&B, were able to explain the significance of each genre of music and how it evolved over time to the music we now listen to today. They had a bit of an education in some of the older musicians like Elvis Presley and Elton John!
Alongside our inquiry, and to support their work for next term, Year 6 pupils learned about the history of World War II and looked at the impact on groups of civilians. This will help them when we find out about three battles that took place during the war.
In geography, the children looked at collecting data and drawing bar charts to show their data. In science, they have found out about the heart and the circulatory system. Pupils have learned how blood moves around our bodies and what our blood is made up of. They also learned more about what keeps us healthy, which linked with our PSHE work this term through which we were looking at mental health and how to support a strong mental health.
