Welcome to Year 1!
It has been wonderful to welcome the children back to school for the beginning of the new academic year, and they have settled into Year 1 brilliantly.
Line of Inquiry 1 - An inquiry into what makes up our identity
In this line of inquiry there has been a lot of class discussion about what makes us who we are. The children have created some fact files about themselves, and have talked about the different aspects of their lives and relationships that make them all individuals. They have discussed a huge range of topics such as their likes and dislikes, the things they enjoy about school, their families and which celebrations and activities they enjoy sharing with them, as well as what makes each of us special. The children have been extremely open minded in their learning and understand that, while we all have similarities and differences, we respect each other and embrace our differences.
Line of Inquiry 2 - An inquiry into how our relationships and experiences shape who we are
Reflecting on our families has been an enjoyable aspect of the children's learning this module, and they have loved talking about which people are special to them and why this is. They have explored friendships, being able to identify what the characteristics that make what they consider to be a good friend, as well as reflecting on their own qualities that make them good friends. The children have listened to some parables, such as the Good Samaritan, and can understand the importance of making the right choices and trying not to make the wrong choices.
Line of Inquiry 3 - An inquiry into reflecting on how we can improve our minds, bodies and feelings
PE and PSHE have been an integral part of this module's learning, and the children have participated with great enthusiasm in an array of physical activities and exercises and class discussions about our emotions. They are able to explain why and how we keep our bodies and minds fit and healthy through exercise and healthy eating, as well as personal hygiene, and found the lesson about germs particularly entertaining. The children have had an opportunity to perform the story of Little Red Riding Hood, which has been our key text this module, and have been able to relate to the emotions expressed in the story to their own personal experiences and feelings.
