Political Science

WELCOME!

I hope you find all the tools you need to learn more about me, my approach to teaching, and the classes I offer here at Lane Community College.

ABOUT ME

Hello! I'm Dr. M and I teach a variety of political science classes here at Lane. I earned my Ph.D. at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with concentrations in political theory and international relations. What I enjoy most about teaching is seeing students realize the different ways in which they already engage in political science while they learn about how they can strengthen those engagements through a better understanding of the discipline. My core teaching philosophy is pretty simple: my job is to teach you how to think, not what to think.

As an instructor, I am committed to helping to erase the barriers that many students face throughout their college career. You will notice that nearly all of my courses have been designated as low cost course materials ($40 or less for the course materials). I pride myself on well organized courses, detailed rubrics, and specific feedback on assignments. You can visit my permanent online space here

Please feel free to contact me at: masakie[at]lanecc.edu with any questions about political science!

WHY POLITICAL SCIENCE?

"Because it makes use of the remaining sciences and, further, because it legislates what one ought to do and what to abstain from, [the political art's] end would encompass those of the others, with the result that this would be the human good"
- Aristotle in Nicomachean Ethics

Every day, we are influenced by politics and political ideas. Laws, regulations, and norms about how we should behave may help us to navigate our daily lives, but this is just one aspect of political science. Typically, political science divided into four major subfields: international relations, political theory, comparative politics, and American politics. At Lane, we offer introductory courses in each of these, as well as more advanced courses like environmental politics and political ideology.

Political science courses can help expand your understanding of politics and lead to more meaningful civic engagement. Political science majors also pursue a variety of career paths including work in government, law, and non-profit organizations.
