General Education Multiple/Single Subject Limited Assignment Permit (GELAP)
Authorization
The General Education Multiple Subject Limited Assignment Teaching Permit authorizes the holder to teach self-contained classes, such as those generally found in elementary schools.
The General Education Single Subject Limited Assignment Teaching Permit authorizes the holder to teach departmentalized courses within the authorized field or fields named on the document, such as those generally found in the middle and high schools.

Requirements for Issuance
Individuals must satisfy all of the following requirements:
Be currently employed by the employing agency requesting such assignment.
The employing agency must have an annual Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators on file with the Commission.
Hold a valid California general education teaching credential based on a baccalaureate degree and a professional preparation program, including student teaching.
Be assigned an experienced educator in each subject area of the limited assignment if the applicant has not obtained permanent status as defined in California Education Code, Section 44929.21 or 44929.22 or 44929.23 in a school district in California within the previous ten years.
Consent to serve on the General Education Multiple or Single Subject Limited Assignment Teaching Permit.

Requirements for Renewal
Individuals must satisfy all of the following requirements:
Be currently employed by the employing agency requesting such assignment.
The employing agency must have an annual Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators on file with the Commission.
Hold a valid California general education teaching credential based on a baccalaureate degree and a professional preparation program, including student teaching.
Satisfy one of the following (coursework or exams must have been completed after the issuance date of the current permit and prior to the requested issuance date):
Complete at least six semester units, or nine quarter units of coursework required for each subject listed on the permit, or
Take all required subject matter examinations for each subject area listed on the permit and pass at least two sections.
Consent to serve on the General Education Multiple or Single Subject Limited Assignment Teaching Permit.

Authorization
The Special Education Limited Assignment Teaching Permit authorizes the holder to teach in the area of specialization listed on the permit in the following settings:
Resource rooms or services
Special education settings
General education settings
Special schools
Home/hospital settings
State hospitals
Development centers
Correctional facilities
Non-public, non-sectarian schools and agencies
Alternative and non-traditional instructional public school settings other than classroom
Areas of Specialization

Language and Academic Development
Requirements for the Initial Issuance
Individuals must satisfy all of the following requirements:
Be currently employed by the employing agency requesting such assignment.
The employing agency must have an annual Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators on file with the Commission.
Hold a valid California special education teaching credential based on a baccalaureate degree and a professional preparation program, including student teaching, including currently-issued Education Specialist Credentials and previously issued special education credentials. Clear, professional clear, and life Speech-Language Pathology or Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credentials with a Special Class Authorization also are appropriate prerequisite credentials.
Complete one of the following:
Three semester units (or four quarter units) of course work from a regionally accredited college or university in each special education specialty area requested. Special education coursework that includes more than one specialty area is acceptable for the initial issuance of a SELAP so long as one of the specialty areas included in the content is the area requested on the permit or
One year of successful full-time classroom experience, or the equivalent in part-time experience, serving in an instructional capacity with special education students in each of the special education specialty areas requested, receiving a favorable evaluation or recommendation by the employing agency.
Be assigned an experienced educator in each of the special education specialty areas of the limited assignment if the applicant has not obtained permanent status as defined in California Education Code, Section 44929.21 or 44929.22 or 44929.23 in a school district in California within the previous ten years

Hold a valid California special education teaching credential based on a baccalaureate degree and a professional preparation program, including student teaching, including currently-issued Education Specialist Credentials and previously issued special education credentials. Clear, professional clear, and life Speech-Language Pathology or Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credentials with Special Class Authorization also are appropriate prerequisite credentials.
Complete at least six semester units or nine quarter units of course work required for issuance of the related credential in each specialty area listed on the permit, verified by a Commission-approved program sponsor on form CL-469-SELAP. The course work must have been completed after the issuance date of the current permit and prior to the requested issuance date.
Consent to serve on the Special Education Limited Assignment Teaching Permit.
