Requirements for the Intern Credential
Individuals must satisfy all of the following requirements for the Multiple Subject Intern Credential:
Possess a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.
Satisfy the basic skills requirement. (See options)
Verify knowledge of the subject to be taught by one of the following methods:
Pass the appropriate subject matter examination(s). See Credential leaflet CL-674M.
Complete a Commission-approved subject-matter preparation program.
Successful completion of applicable coursework verified by a Commission-approved program of professional preparation. Coursework must be completed at a regionally-accredited institution and addresses each of the domains of the subject matter requirements.
Complete a degree major from a regionally-accredited college or university. For a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, the degree major must be in liberal studies or interdisciplinary studies.
Complete a course (two semester units or three quarter units) in the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution or pass an examination given by a regionally-accredited college or university.
Completed application submitted through a Commission-approved program sponsor by online recommendation.
Requirements for the Preliminary Credential:
Individuals must satisfy all of the following requirements for the Multiple Subject Preliminary Credential:
Possess a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.
Satisfy the basic skills requirement. (See options)
Verify subject matter competence by one of the following methods:
Achieve a passing score on the appropriate subject-matter examination(s). Information, including passing scores and registration, can be found in Commission leaflet CL-674M entitled Verifying Subject-Matter Competence by Examination for Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials.
Complete a Commission-approved subject-matter program or its equivalent and obtain verification of completion from the authorized person in the education department of a California college or university with an approved program.
Successful completion of applicable coursework verified by a Commission-approved program of professional preparation. Coursework must be completed at a regionally-accredited institution and addresses each of the domains of the subject matter requirements adopted by the Commission in the content area of the Multiple Subject Credential.
Complete a degree major from a regionally-accredited college or university. For a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, the degree major must be in liberal studies or an interdisciplinary major that includes coursework in the content areas identified in subdivision (b) of California Education Code section 44282.
Successful completion through a combination of coursework and examination options that meet or exceed the domains of the subject matter requirements adopted by the Commission in the content area of the Multiple Subject Credential. Such mixing of options may only be done by candidates enrolled in a Commission-approved preparation program.
Pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment. (RICA)
Complete a course (two semester units or three quarter units) in the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution or pass an examination given by a regionally-accredited college or university.
Complete a Commission-approved multiple subject teacher preparation program, that includes satisfying the following requirements (content listed below must be addressed in the program but does not require specific standalone courses):
Developing English Language Skills, including Reading, by completing comprehensive reading instruction that includes the following: the systematic study of phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding; literature, language and comprehension; and diagnostic and early intervention techniques.
Instruction in foundational and advanced computer technology that includes general and specialized skills in the use of computers and technology in educational settings.
Instruction in Health Education, including, but not limited to, nutrition; the physiological and sociological effects of alcohol, narcotics, and drug abuse; the use of tobacco; and provide verification of training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) that covers infant, child, and adult CPR skills that meets the standards established by the American Heart Association or Red Cross.

Obtain a formal recommendation for the credential by the program sponsor.
Requirements for the Clear Credential:
Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements:
Completion of a Commission-approved Teacher Induction Program.
The Induction program must identify and assign a mentor to each participating teacher within the first 30 days of the participant’s enrollment in the program, matching the mentor and participating teacher according to credentials held, grade level and/or subject area, as appropriate to the participant’s employment.
An individual with both general education (multiple or single subject) and special education preliminary teaching credentials may complete one set of clear credential requirements through a Teacher Induction Program. The list of professional development options in the Individual Learning Plan (ILP) must address the candidate’s needs for both the general education and special education credentials.
An individual who earned the clear multiple or single subject credential by completing a general education Induction Program who subsequently earns a preliminary Education Specialist Instruction Credential (in any of the specialty areas) may be recommended for the clear Education Specialist Credential without being required to repeat an induction program.
