1 Semester Course

Ms. Ting

Art Class

Students use a range of media in our sixth grade art class. The ones listed below only showcase our major units. We have weekly warm up drawings (these are responses to a creative thinking prompt), weekly mini. projects (where we can explore a range of media on a smaller scale), and a few quizzes/assessments along the way as well (over major unit vocabulary).

Mini Monsters

In sixth grade, we practice using a pinch hand-building method to create miniature clay monsters or creatures.

Grid Drawing

In sixth grade, students practice using the grid method to complete a complex drawing with correct proportion and scale.

Balinese Masks

In sixth grade, students practice mixing tempera paint into various colors and then use a specific color scheme in their finished paintings.

Visual Art/ Design

Showcased on this site are just a couple projects the 6th Grade went through during the 2020 online distance learning curriculum.

Students start with an exploration in theme and what art is and how artists get ideas for art making. The MYP asks for students to create visual journals so the students become familiar with one area to sketch, define terms, explore new media/ mediums, research art and artists, make list, write thoughts down, experimenting and reflect on their art. Students then learn the power of critique and revision learning how to look at art and use specific feedback to improve. Students then get to create using there knowledge on how to generate an idea, how to plan, critique, and revise. They learn to be an artist by use the media/ medium that will work with their creative idea meaning no 2 art pieces are the same when an assignment is turned in.

6th Grade Projects

Creature Parts

A theme for the semester was "Creature", so under that umbrella the students created art that reflected their idea of the theme. We worked individually at home in creating different Creature "Parts".

Austin's Butterfly Experiment

A great model of critique and revision for students of all ages. The specific changes in drawings can be linked to very specific feedback from peers, illuminating the need for critique to be targeted and specific. A model of the power of perseverance and revision to improve quality of work before the artwork is completed.

Artist Trading Cards

Artist trading cards (ATCs) is a "Collaborative Cultural Performance." Artist trading cards are 2 1⁄2 by 3 1⁄2 inches. They are self-made unique works made to exchanged and collected with other artists.
