Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow (VTfT) fosters student interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the teaching profession, and allows students to explore careers in education. Students build a foundation for teaching; learn the history, structure, and governance of the profession; apply professional techniques in the VTfT classroom; and reflect on their teaching. A highlight of the program is that students participate in an externship in which they assist in an actual classroom setting (elementary, middle school, or high school) of their choice. Provides an orientation to the teaching profession in Virginia, including historical perspectives, current issues, and future trends in education on the national and state levels. Emphasizes information about teacher licensure examinations, steps to certification, teacher preparation and induction programs, and attention to critical shortage areas in Virginia. Provides an overview of the physical, intellectual, cognitive, language, social, and emotional development of human beings from birth to death, with a focus on birth to adolescence. Emphasizes how hereditary and environmental influences impact the development of the whole child. This course is a semester long Includes supervised field placement (recommended: 40 clock hours) in a K-12 school.
