This course is a one-year, occupational preparation course usually taken at the ninth grade level. Approximately one half of the course is devoted to agricultural mechanics with emphasis placed on skill development in basic metals, tools and cold metal. An introduction to arc welding, sheet metal, soldering and brazing, plan reading and sketching, and hand woodworking is included. The remainder of the course emphasizes the development of competencies in plant sciences, rural and urban living, leadership, and resource conservation.

HORTICULTURE SCIENCE

This course prepares students for postsecondary educational career programs and entry-level positions in the horticulture industry. Instruction includes industry safety standards, the applied science of plant production, greenhouse operation and management, landscape design, and the turfgrass industry. Students will use plant and soil science to propagate and cultivate horticultural crops in a greenhouse and/or land lab. Contextual instruction and student participation in co-curricular career and technical student organization (CTSO) activities will develop leadership, interpersonal, and career skills. High-quality work-based learning (HQWBL) will provide experiential learning opportunities related to students' career goals and/or interests, integrated with instruction, and performed in partnership with local businesses and organizations.

AGRICULTURE PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

This course emphasizes one or more areas of plant science, animal science, soil science, agriculture business management, and agricultural mechanization, based upon the student’s employment objective. Supervised occupational experience programs and leadership training are important parts of the course.

TURFGRASS MANAGEMENT

Prerequisites: Horticulture Sciences
Fee $25
Students will begin to master professional skills to establish and maintain environmentally friendly turfgrass in residential areas; golf courses; parks and recreational facilities; athletic fields; and school, industrial, and institutional campuses. The course integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts through hands-on application of sound turfgrass management and includes opportunities for industry certification.
ADAPTIVE AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION
