Hello,
I hope your summer is off to a great start! Perhaps we had the chance to meet at the summer academy in Manhattan! If not, I hope we can see you at one of the other academies (check below for more information). I have included one of our keynote's (Tabatha Rosproy, the 2020 National Teacher of the Year) quotes from her opening message to us. Sometimes over the summer we can not only focus on the things that we are wanting to implement and try...but also on those practices that perhaps we have held onto that aren't those evidence-based practices we strive for. As we learn more, we can learn not only what to try, but what to leave behind.
We have started the Fresh Look at Phonics study- and over 80 have registered! I hope you enjoy the conversation and the learning and networking that this opportunity provides. There will be additional opportunites for this type of learning, so stay tuned and check below for what has already been planned!
The survey that was sent out in January identified that teachers are interested in learning about good ways to structure their 90 minute literacy block. You will see below that there are four opportunities throughout the state for you to attend that professional learning starting this September- see below for your invitation to a 90 Minute Block Party! Registration will be coming, but see below for a location close to you and mark your calendars.
I hope this summer can be a time of renewal and rest for you!
Yours in education,
Laurie

We know that phonemic awareness and phonics are both essential parts of a strong early literacy program. It is also really important to know how those things differ as we select curriculum to support our teaching. This article can help bring clarification as you consider the resources you are using in teaching and determine what else you might need to meet the needs of ALL students!

Keep in mind- that explicit spelling instruction isn't the "traditional model" of memorizing a list for a Friday test. Consider ways you can bring intention and strong practice to your direct spelling instruction based on what students are learning and what they have mastered.
See Timothy Shanahan's latest blog for some thoughts to ponder.
Hoping you have some fun time with friends this summer!
Friends
Friends come in all colors
And sizes and shapes
Friends share their jump ropes
And friends share their grapes
They like the same jokes
And they like the same shows
They lend you their ear
And they lend you their clothes
A world without friends
I don't think I could bear it
Life is much better
With good friends to share it
