Happy New Year!
I hope your holiday was restful and provided you with time to catch your breath and the chance to spend time with friends and family. AND, of course, I hope you found some time to read something that entertained you or inspired you!
We are gearing up for our dyslexia webinar series (via Zoom) provided by Dr. Suzanne Adlof with the first session this Wednesday, January 11th at 5:00 pm. Dates and locations are listed below. If you have a specific topic you would like to see included for the academies, please send me an e-mail at lcurtis@ksde.org and I will do what I can to include that as we make our plans for summer.
If you have other specific needs for professional learning regarding implementation of structured literacy in your classroom, please send me an e-mail at ELitDyslexia@ksde.org and I will do my best to address your specific questions and/ or needs.
Please share this newsletter widely and let me know if I can help you in any way,

Calling all Magicians...yes, I mean you!
If you teach reading then you make the invisible, visible... like magic! As children move from oral language into making that connection to print, they learn that what they hear...the invisible, can be written down and made visible. As if it is a "secret" code- we need to give our students the master key to unlock this secret and that lays in teaching the way sounds are orthographically mapped to print. The value of developing a child's awareness of individual sounds of language is continually the topic of research and as our knowledge base for reading acquisition is built...we, as educators, continue to learn and put that knowledge into our practice.
Look at this article provided by the International Dyslexia Association related to what the newest research says about the value of knowing how to teach and integrate teaching of phonemes, graphemes, letter names and what that actually looks like in your classroom. As more and more research is conducted, it is important that we take that knowledge and know how to look critically at our curriculum and our practice to continually improve our teaching of reading and writing.
I have received requests to bring this PD to more locations, so we are making it available for everyone! Grab your team and come to our 90 Minute Block Party Virtual Professional Learning Opportunity on February 13, 2023
Presented by Hailey Hawkinson, KSDE Teacher Leader Consultant
Do you wonder...
How your K-3 curriculum aligns to structured literacy?
How, or with what, you should supplement your curriculum if you find it is lacking?
What are the "non-negotiables" in a 90-minute literacy block?
While you can come "solo" to this Zoom event, it would be a powerful opportunity for you to gather your grade level or primary team and participate in this Virtual PD that will help you examine your current- or proposed curriculum and how it aligns to KSDE's required structured literacy model for early literacy instruction.
The day will include:
6 hours of PD focused on the Science of Reading,
the tools and process for curriculum review based on Scarborough's Rope,
vetted resources that can supplement your literacy block to meet the needs of all students,
Work time for you or your team with the opportunity for consultation by KSDE Early Literacy/ Dyslexia Team members
To register, select 90 Minute Block Party Virtual PD
A certificate of completion will be issued by KSDE for those actively participating in this PD event
Summer 2023- Bring your book and gain some knowledge...and credit!
