We are definitely into the "dog days" of summer. I hope you are staying cool and finding opportunity to rest and refresh. Teachers in certain licensure areas were required to participate in 6 hours of training by August 31, 2021. For those new to your district, who have not received the KSDE Dyslexia Training (elementary educators, high incidence special education, ELA 5-12, reading specialists, school psychologists) those modules are available for use here:

Structured Literacy: The 90 Minute Block Party

Sessions led by: Hailey Hawkinson, 2nd Grade Teacher & KSDE Teacher Leader Consultant

You've got 90 minutes for structured literacy... now what? During this full day workshop we will explore the vital elements for structured literacy instruction rooted in The Science of Reading, discover ways to implement these elements, and examine the time structure within the block. Whether you have an adopted reading curriculum or supplemental materials, we will use a hands-on approach for restructuring your block to fit your students and their needs. Join this party to unlock the potential of your 90 minute reading block.

Target Audience: K-2/3

Participants will bring along their literacy curriculum and a list of programs/materials available for use in their district. We will be exploring structured literacy elements within your curriculum/materials to highlight "non-negotiables" and gaps within the curriculum.

Phonological awareness is like an umbrella. Rhyming, alliteration, sentence segmentation, syllables, onset and rime, and phonemic awareness all exist under this umbrella with phonemic awareness being the most advanced skill of phonological awareness.
