Hello,
The school year is ramping up and we have certainly been in the "dog days" of summer. I hope this newsletter answers a few of your questions and also provides you with some things to look forward to as we move into the new academic year. Please scroll through the opportunities and resources below- as some of them will be happening SOON! I would also really appreciate hearing what you would like to learn more about as you plan your PD for the school year. To share your thoughts, select this link: Professional Development Interests.
If you have new teachers or specialists working with elementary students or new secondary ELA teachers who have not been trained in the state required dyslexia modules, you can find those modules at the KSDE Dyslexia web page or by using this link. Required Dyslexia Training.
For those other teachers who have received the six hour of training, your district can determine the required training based on your needs. The training should be "hands-on, with evidence-based practices, on the nature of dyslexia, procedures to identify students who are struggling in reading, intervention strategies and procedures, tiered intervention practices, or progress monitoring". For more information see: KSDE Required Dyslexia Annual Training.
All the best to you as you enter into the new school year!

Kansas Science of Reading Professional Learning Course
KSDE has allocated a portion of the State's ESSER funds to address potential learning loss that resulted from the shift to emergency remote instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift disrupted instruction of foundational literacy skills of young students in Kansas and leading to a potential learning loss. To help recover from this KSDE is offering free LETRS® training to teachers in Kansas who provide direct instruction to students PreK through 3rd Grade in any public or accredited private school. This opportunity covers the cost of the online course and training days for PreK - 3rd grade teachers; there is no cost to the school nor teacher for this training. To ensure that all teachers, including teachers just coming out of college, will be able to help students this training opportunity is also available to higher education faculty who teach literacy courses in Kansas teacher preparation programs.

The Garden Poem
First plant four rows of peas:
Presence,
Promptness,
Preparation,
Professionalism.
Next to these plant three rows of squash:
Squash gossip,
Squash indifference,
Squash criticism.
Then plant four rows of lettuce:
Let us follow guidelines,
Let us be true to our objectives,
Let us be loyal and unselfish,
Let us appreciate one another.
No garden is complete without turnips:
Turn up with a smile,
Turn up with new ideas
Turn up with determination to make everything count for something good and worthwhile.
