NĀ WAIWAI KŪPUNA
NĀ WAIWAI KŪPUNA
Summary: For two thousand years our kūpuna passed down all ʻike needed to thrive in our island home, and in 1840 established one of the worldʻs first free public education systems for boys and girls, which placed Native Hawaiians among the wordʻs top three educated nations just two decades later. After constituting Hawaiʻiʻs most under- and uneducated major ethnic group for at least the past 50 years, Hawaiians are creating rigorous, culturally-driven models of education that are family-oriented, community-based and grounded in a Pedagogy of Aloha, which is at once ancient and modern, and reconnects all with the ʻike and waiwai kūpuna. It is now our kuleana to collaboratively forge a de-centralized, community-based, sustainable Hawaiian education system, grounded in our waiwai kūpuna, which will position us as 21st century world leaders in quality of life, value of heritage, social cohesion and trust, felt safety, cultural influence, kanaka entrepreneurship, equitable distribution of resources, lack of corruption, green technology, island sustainability and most of all happiness.

Introductions to Hawaiian Culture- Based Education
This strand hopes to convey the humble and responsible exchange of learning and knowing. Acknowledging that we all are on a journey to gather and freely share 'ike (knowledge and understanding) and if we do this, we ensure continuity of our cultural knowing for generations to come.
Advanced and Inspirational Strand
"Ka 'I'ini o Ka ʻĀina Aloha" is the strong desire (and resulting passion) for the lands that we love. This is the innovative edge, the spark, desire and passion to create positive action and change. The direct result of teachings and 'ike of our brilliant kūpuna.

‘Awapuhimele Napoleon is a Program Manager in the Kamehameha Schools Strategy and Transformation Group. She was born and raised on Molokaʻi and is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools. ‘Awapuhi has worked in Hawaiian Culture Based Education for the last 20 years. She is currently teaching a virtual Papa Pilina ʻĀina to Kapālama Middle School Students on Molokaʻi, Maui, and Lānaʻi, introducing haumāna to Hawaiian cultural traditions and practices that establish and strengthen relationships to ʻāina to equip them with knowledge and skills that allow them to serve as stewards and advocates of ʻāina.

Ian Nāhulu Maioho is a product of the Kaiapuni system on the island of Molokaʻi. He is also a proud Kamehameha Schools Kapālama 2007 graduate who furthered his education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. It was there that he earned a B.A. in Hawaiian Studies, a teaching certificate through the Kahuawaiola Indigenous Teacher Education Program, and an M.A. in Indigenous Language and Culture Education. He dedicates his life to the revitalization of the Hawaiian culture and the revernacularization of the Hawaiian language within his ʻohana, his community, and his home island of Molokaʻi.
