I’m not experienced or comfortable with teaching culture as an educator here in Hawaii, yet. How can I begin that process of ho’oma’a / hoʻopili (becoming comfortable and connected to) Hawaiian Culture-Based Education (HCBE) in my role?
Introductory & beginning strand. The presentations in this strand will assist a beginner in HCBE to learn about basic resources and teaching tools.
The Hawaiian term "a’o" means "to teach" and also to "learn." This dual meaning implies reciprocal relationship and the gathering and sharing of knowledge. We teach and we learn--a'o aku, a'o mai.
Presentations are organized in this strand with the hope to convey the need for the humble and responsible exchange of learning and teaching. Acknowledging that we all are on a journey to gather and freely share 'ike (knowledge and understanding) and if we do this, we ensure continuity of our cultural knowing for generations to come.
How are best practices for Hawaiian Culture-Based Education (HCBE) being applied in new educational paradigms (i.e. online, remote, distance, and 'ōiwi (native) leadership development learning settings)?
Intermediate & expanding strand. Building off the first strand, the continuing quest for knowledge will reveal the many treasures that one can get when you continue on in humility to "noke mau," continue on and persevere to gather more.
The Hawaiian term "noke" is to persist, to persevere. In the context of this conference, the presentations in this strand will assist the intermediate level teacher to continue to add to their toolbox of teaching resources, especially online resources.
Presenters in this strand will share specific units, lessons, resources, programs and elements of their practice that we can all benefit and learn from in a variety of educational contexts.
Advanced and Inspirational strand. This strand strives to represent a state of “wokeness,” showcasing how HCBE has been internalized by those living the values of our kūpuna.
"Ka 'I'ini o Ka ʻĀina Aloha" is the strong desire (and resulting passion) for the lands that we love. This is the innovative edge; the spark, desire and passion to create positive action and change. The direct result of teachings and 'ike of our brilliant kūpuna.
Highlighting people, organizations and examples of those that are activated by the aloha that they have for Hawai’i.
Those in broader community who might not think of themselves as educators but are modeling the changes they want to see in the world.
Let's holoholo on the 'Āina!!!
We are also offering Virtual Huakaʻi or excursions to explore some of our wahi pana (legendary & storied places) scattered across our pae ʻāina (island chain). This section offers participants digital resources centered around ʻāina, the true text book of our kūpuna. Presenters in this strand will virtually display the beauty and work they are actively engaged in on their respective ʻāina across Hawaiʻi nei. After viewing the digital field trip content, presenters will be available for live Q & A time with you.
