PROMPTING PRACTICE

• Select a Sentence Starter: Carefully choose a captivating sentence starter like "It was a dark, stormy night," "Once upon a time, in a land far away," or "This week in global news events."

• Ask the Chatbot: Input your selected sentence starter and ask the chatbot to finish the sentence and elaborate on that sentence starter. 

Reflection Question: How did the chatbot's response align with or differ from your expectations, and what does this suggest about its creative and linguistic capabilities?

Prompt Example: 

"Finish the following sentence and write a 3 paragraph story related.... "Once upon a time, there lived a...."

Follow Up Prompt: 

"Continue the story and introduce a plot twist..."

• Choose Your Expertise Area: Identify a subject you know well.

• Query the Chatbot: Ask the chatbot to explain this concept.

• Assess Accuracy and Depth: Evaluate the response for correctness and detail.

• Ask Follow-Up Questions: Ask it to turn that information/response into a poem or song to demonstrate creative limitations. 

Reflection Question: How accurate and comprehensive was the chatbot's explanation compared to your understanding, and what does this reveal about its knowledge base?

Follow Up Prompt:

• Identify an Unfamiliar Concept: Think of something you know little about.

• Request an Explanation: Ask the chatbot to explain this concept.

• Ask for Simplified Versions: Request the chatbot to simplify the explanation for different understanding levels (8th grade, 3rd grade).

• Ask for Comparison: Prompt to compare new information to something you are familiar with or have a great depth of background knowledge in. 

Reflection Question: How did the simplified explanations enhance or alter your understanding, and how could this approach be beneficial in educational settings?

Prompt Example: 

"Assume the role of an expert quantum mechanic. Help me understand the basics of quantum mechanics. I currently do not know anything about quantum mechanics. Respond in bullet points and identify the most important details related with short concise descriptions" 

Follow Up Prompt: 

"Revise your response so that a 3rd grader would understand those concepts and ideas." 

• Identify a Dream Goal: Think of a large, aspirational goal.

• Seek Chatbot Assistance: Ask the chatbot for a plan to achieve this goal.

• Evaluate and Refine the Plan: Consider the feasibility of the chatbot's plan and think about ways it could be refined or adapted to be more realistic or effective.

Reflection Question: How did the chatbot's plan contribute to your understanding of the steps needed to achieve your goal, and how can this process be applied to student goal setting and project planning?

Prompt Example: 

"Assume the role of an expert skatepark designer and builder. Help me craft a plan to propose to build a skatepark in my town . I am a passionate educator and skateboard who believe this could benefit the youth in the surrounding community. Break down the process step by step and identify any important factors I would need to consider when creating this proposal. I would like the skatepark to be open within 3 years." 

Follow Up Prompt: 

"Can you ask me a series of questions that you can analyze to gauge my readiness for step 1?"
