My inquiry this semester is based on how white settlers and their push into the United States impacted Native Americans. I deiced to research this project because Native culture has always interested me and I wanted to do a project that highlighted the injustice they face, and have faced, in American history. A main research concept I looked into was: What influence has assimilation had on indigenous populations? This concept had me look into the policies created to take away native land along with the overall land loss of the Native Americans. Some major sources that helped me were government sources such as the Library of Congress and the U.S. Department of the Interior. These sources gave me primary information has helped me form my final products. For my final products this semester, I created a map of native land loss and two museum displays. Within these products, I show the loss of native land and why along with showcasing native culture. Others should be interested in this topic because thousands of Native people have been negatively and unfairly impacted by white expansion.
This map gives a "moving" visual of the land reduction of the American Indians between 1607 and 1890. It also includes a map of today's reservations.
These museum displays give an overview of the cultural differences between the American Indians and the Europeans when it comes to the environment. Along with a look at how the Chippewa tribe viewed the land they lived on.
