Vanam Diaries is a school-led initiative that aims to document the events happening in the surroundings and the town of Kodaikanal in the form of a newsletter; created and led by students. We are encouraged to explore different expressive forms of media when it comes to content creation; such as photojournalism, documentaries, or journalistic articles. In order to do this, we often set out on journalism focused excursions, to visit the local areas and get real insight into the lives of the people and wildlife in the surrounding environment.

1) How did this experience assist you in identifying your goals and developing areas of growth?
This experience helped me understand the importance of storytelling for social welfare. It highlighted the need to explore and share the lives of those in underprivileged communities. This has made me more passionate about using my skills for social impact.
2) What challenges did you have in this experience? Which skills did you develop?
The challenges included gaining trust from people hesitant to share their stories. This experience honed my communication and empathy skills. Learning to handle sensitive information and ensuring ethical reporting were crucial lessons.
3) What did you learn by initiating your CAS experience/project that you can use again?
Initiating this project taught me the significance of personal connections in storytelling. It emphasised the importance of respecting people's privacy and consent when dealing with personal narratives.
4) How did you show commitment and perseverance? In what ways did you gain skills?
We showed commitment by persistently approaching and engaging with individuals despite initial hesitations. This experience enhanced my determination and adaptability in navigating challenging situations.
5) In what ways did you gain skills of working collaboratively?
Working with a partner during visits and in crafting the article showcased my ability to collaborate effectively. It helped reinforce the idea that diverse perspectives contribute to a more impactful narrative.
6) Which issues of global significance are you engaged with in making decisions and taking actions?
By focusing on the Rainbow Association of Welfare in a slum area, this experience connected me with the global issue of poverty and the importance of small displays of effort in addressing social challenges.
7) How are you recognising and considering the ethics of choices and actions in this experience?
Ensuring authenticity, respecting privacy, and obtaining permission for photographs demonstrated our commitment to ethical journalism. This experience instilled in me a sense of responsibility in storytelling and the impact it can have on individuals and communities.
