FUTURE STARS SEMINAR & NEXT GENERATION CHALLENGE

ÖSTERSUND, SWEDEN 4-8 MARCH 2019

The British Biathlon Union (BBU) have selected three athletes from the British Nordic Development Squad (BNDS) and BBU to attend the Future Stars Seminar in Östersund, Sweden, by the Invitation of the International Biathlon Union. The seminar takes place concurrently with the 2019 Biathlon World Championships. The invitation has been extended to three 15/17-year olds plus a Team Leader from each country. KHS student Jake Bell has been selected to go from Great Britain. Well done Jake, we are all very proud of you.

Young girls do well at Shinty 6s tournament.

Mr Mackintosh and Shinty Ambassador, Katie Falconer took a very young pair of teams to the Donella Crawford girls shinty 6s at Ballachulish last Wednesday. We had all our girls from S1 to S3 whereas the other teams all had quite a number of older players, so our girls were really up against it.

Our first team started by winning 2-0 against Ardnamurchan A. The two goals came from excellent movement from midfielder Katie Slimon and were finished by full forward Hope Borthwick, powering them into the back of the net. Game two against Lochgilphead didn’t go quite as planned though another goal came from a good goal hit from Abbie Macleod up to Borthwick who swiftly passed the keeper bringing the final score to 2-1 to Lochgilphead. Plockton came on with force and showed us our greatest challenge of the day. Katie Slimon was moved up forward as strong defenders Ellie Miller and Kirsty Grant stepped to the mark, having some strong tackles and clearances throughout the tournament. Our player of the day, Leah Miller switched between midfield and full forward powering through challenges. She provided some great passes and assists though she had some trouble staying on two feet. The team came together in the last game against Uddingston to bring the score to a positive 3-2 win and showed great determination throughout.

Our development team team also put in some great performances. They were faced with teams from Plockton, Oban and Portree in their first three games, with narrow 1-0 losses. All the girls had a go as goalkeeper, which produced some interesting, if unorthodox saves. Rebecca and Gabi were particularly impressive in defense, refusing to give up chasing their opponents. At different times Catrin and Millie played in the centre, with Millie’s hitting proving strong. Up front were Charley, Amy and our guest player from Grantown Grammar, Ffion. All of these girls ran their hearts out.

World Book Day

Great to welcome writer, Olga Wojtas to K.H.S to speak to some of our Advanced Higher English students. Her recently published novel was discussed in detail, as was her journalism and her travels. She gave a fascinating insight into the works of Muriel Spark, which was especially useful to the students who have been studying two of Spark's texts. Thanks to Merryn Glover for helping to organise the visit.

Support Centre Swimming Competition

Students Arran Millar, Callum Macdonald, Liam Ritchie, Kyle Cruickshank and Ross Cuthbert have just swam a combined total of 106 lengths. Great work and determination by all.

Girls Hockey KHS V Dingwall 19/3

It was a tough day at the office for the senior girls Hockey Team tonight against a very good Dingwall side! The girls stuck in and kept working hard, playing some good hockey which was great to see!

It was Tori, Katie, Sophie and Rachael’s last game as they leave school in a few weeks, thanks for all the hard work girls it’s been a pleasure!

Although the result didn’t go our way at least the new strips looked good!

Shinty Festival held at KHS

On the 21st March twenty six S.1 and S2 pupils participated in a six a-side shinty festival at the High School organised by the Camanachd Association. We welcomed teams from Oban, Charleston Academy and Inverness Royal Academy. The teams participated in twenty eight games of shinty over the course of the afternoon, with each team getting seven games. The idea was to get as many pupils joining in and enjoying their shinty, rather than having the pressure of trying to win a tournament. Team captains for the K.H.S teams were Hope Borthwick, Rasmus Cheyne, Katie Slimon and Calum Douglas. It was great to see players who had stopped shinty after primary school, coming back to enjoy the game.

Thanks to Katie Drain for organising everything; to Russell Jones and Kingussie Camanachd for lending their goals; to the Canteen staff for their coffees and teas; to Mrs Richard’s Hawaiian team for their baking; referees Andrew Buchan, Fin Anderson and Ritchie Irvine; and especially to Douglas for setting up and lining the pitches to inch perfect measurements (surely putting him in contention for the Camanachd Cup final pitch preparation!)
