MacBean Cup returns to the High School.

The school’s S.1 and S.2 shinty players travelled to An Aird, Fort William yesterday to compete against five other schools in the MacBean Cup 9 a-side shinty tournament. The opening game against the I.R.A saw us pepper their goal with shots. Unfortunately none of them were on target, as our players went for power rather than accuracy. The opposition deservedly found the net with an excellent angled shot. The next game was against home favourites, Lochaber. Despite an well-worked goal from Logan Warwick, we conceded two late goals. At that point it didn’t seem like we were going to have a great afternoon.

A change of tactics saw Logan dropping back to defence and then everything seemed to click for all the players. Rasmus Cheyne organised his defence superbly, with Cole MacCallum having an excellent tournament. The game against Glen Urquhart saw Cole and Logan pinch goals from close-in, but the highlight was a Charlie Campbell strike from distance. Logan Chisholm, Katie Slimon, and Kyle Clark covered lots of ground, either up front or in the centre. The game against Oban saw an even better performance, with Captain Calum Douglas scoring with a superb strike. Good work from fellow forward Svend Pedersen saw Hope Borthwick score twice in this game. Our final league game was against a strong Dingwall Academy side. However, there was no stopping K.H.S. Goals from Calum, then from battling full forward Bobby Russell gave us a 2-1 win and put us through to the final on goal difference. The star of this game turned out to be goalie, Fergus Sherlock who made two tremendous saves from deflected shots.

The final was against old rival, Lochaber H.S. Despite being the better team, we were unable to get past the home goalkeeper, the match finished 0-0 and we went to a penalty shoot out. Temporary Kingussie keeper Fergus then managed to stop two penalties, while we scored four out of four. All twelve players played their part in winning the trophy and deserved their medals. A bit like Mr Mackintosh, after a slow start, they got there in the end.

Their attitude, effort and behaviour were spot-on. Player of the tournament for our side was a difficult choice, but Charlie Campbell’s non-stop running, tackling and positive attitude means that he gets the award this time.

Drama Club at Inverness Conference

Six members of the School Drama Club travelled up to the Lochardil House Hotel in Inverness last week to perform at the Highland Senior Citizens Network Annual Conference. Well done to Remy Cain, Victoria Rose, Morven Bayton, Jemima Benbow, Harris Hansler-Ross and Finlay Bayton. They had written and produced a short play about Fire Safety for older people which they performed to a very appreciative audience, who laughed in all the right places and clapped at the end.

None of this would have been possible without the help of director Megan Shiells and assistant director, Jamie Jack; the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service; Mrs Fenton for driving and supervision duties; and particular thanks to Jo Cowan, the Co-ordinator for the Network (and former K.H.S pupil) for helping out with everything in many different ways. Hopefully, the Club will be involved in more projects with the Senior Citizens Network in the future.

All pupils are welcome to come along to the Club, which meets after school every Tuesday. See Mr Mackintosh for more details.

PICTISH AFTERNOON

A playful afternoon discovering the past as S1 pupils discussed Pictish history, recreated Pictish symbols and got the opportunity to carve stone and soap. Some also enjoyed engaging in 'living history' by dressing up and handling artefacts from the past. Many thanks to Julia Brunner and John Borland from Historic Environment Scotland for an exciting and engaging afternoon.

S3's Employability Skills

A massive well done to the S3’s for taking part in their Employability Skills Interviews. Students were interviewed alongside their Visual CV’s and discussed how their wider achievement opportunities link to employment through core skills.

A huge thanks to the careers advisors at SDS Inverness & Central Highland for holding the interviews and providing some valuable feedback to students.
