Animal science is a junior and senior level course with curriculum focused around veterinary medicine, and hands on application. In animal science students are expected to spend a large amount of their time practicing and utilizing the curriculum taught in the classroom. For example in the animal health unit students are required to examine fecal samples from their livestock projects at our school farm, analyze parasite eggs and recommend a treatment protocol. Students also interact with industry professionals through several industry visits including trips to the UC Davis Veterinary Medicine training center in Tulare as well as the Fresno Zoo. To further their knowledge of the industry guest speakers attend each year, at least one veterinarian and one animal health expert. Our labs range from processing lambs, and having students dock tails, give injections, and ear tag, all the way to their classroom final, performing a simple necropsy. Due to this class many students have chosen a career related to animal science, and veterinary medicine. Students have the opportunity to take two years of animal science courses which count as a laboratory credit class.
