PLO 2- Critique and synthesize research and identify appropriate research methodologies to solve problems in the field
PLO 5- Identify needs and connect individuals and communities with information that engages and empowers them
6D. Implement principles, concepts, and techniques for understanding and assessing the information needs of a community, and understand the ways the library can assist and collaborate in meeting those needs
7A. Discover, engage with, and synthesize existing research from the field using multidisciplinary approaches to various information issues to align relevant findings to one's own professional development and/or institutional needs
7B. Recognize the ethical and appropriate application of key research methods, techniques, and designs in the field, including the generation, analysis, evaluation, and presentation of data, and the utilization of research tools
7C. Understand principles and issues evolving with research, including an awareness of how professional and cultural values may influence each stage of the research lifecycle, the barriers related to access to research, and the tension between research and its application to professional practice
Museum identifies the communities it serves, and makes appropriate decisions in how it serves them
Museum strives to be inclusive and offers opportunities for diverse participation
Programs are accessible and encourage participation of the widest possible audience consistent with the museum's mission and resources
This research proposal was completed for LIS 60050: Research & Assessment in Library & Information Science. As part of the proposal, I had to choose a topic, find and analyze prior relevant research, develop a research question, and determine an appropriate approach and research method. For my proposal, I decided to expand on the research paper I completed in LIS 60030: People in the Information Ecology, in which I explored the information needs and behaviors of young adults in museums, by focusing on after-hours events and late night programs at museums and their potential impact on young adult visitation and engagement. In writing the proposal, I reviewed and synthesized relevant literature and described how I would go about conducting a quantitative research study, including how I would collect and analyze data. I also identified the possible limitations of such a study and discussed ways to address them, and developed a work plan.
The research proposal allowed me to obtain experience with finding, analyzing, and synthesizing research within the field of library and information science, and it provided me with an opportunity to learn how to apply different research methods, techniques, and designs. Through my topic, I was also able to address the importance of museums encouraging diverse participation and identifying and meeting the needs of different communities of users.
