The Mayor’s Office Project was completed for LIS 60040: Information Institutions & Professions. As part of the project, I had to choose an information institution, research it, and evaluate how well it would be able to thrive in a changing information environment to determine whether it should be considered an outstanding institution. For my project, I chose to research and evaluate the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In determining how well the Boston Museum of Fine Arts would be able to thrive in a changing information environment, I had to identify some of the issues and trends affecting the institution and evaluate its mission, goals, policies, and programs in order to determine whether the museum was addressing them and assess how successful they were. Using all of the information I had gathered, I then created a presentation that provided an overview of the museum and my findings and discussed why it should be considered an outstanding institution.
Through this project, I was able to recognize and learn more about the changing cultural, educational, and social roles and responsibilities of information professionals, as well as identify some of the major trends currently affecting information institutions. I also gained experience in evaluating and assessing programs and services.
