This preservation assistance grant assignment was the other major assignment of the LIS 60654: Preservation & Conservation of Heritage Materials course. After completing the preservation assessment, I used the results and recommendations from it to complete an application for a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant. The grant application included a description of the proposed project, in this case funding for improving the preservation of the Palmdale City Library’s Local History Collection, as well as a work plan, a list of supplies and equipment that would be purchased with the funding along with their costs, and a proposed budget.
The preservation assistance grant assignment provided me with invaluable hands-on experience in completing a grant application, including developing a project budget. Through this assignment, I learned how to analyze the needs of a real collection and to determine how best to meet those needs in the most cost-effective way possible.
