Museum demonstrates a commitment to providing the public with physical and intellectual access to the museum and its resources
As part of the LIS 60635: Cultural Heritage Informatics course, I had to select a cultural object or historic landmark that was not well documented and create a website for it. For my cultural object or historic landmark, I chose the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park, which is a site located in my hometown of North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Once I had chosen an object or landmark, I then had to describe it and create an item record for it using the Cataloging Cultural Objects (CCO) standard, which provides guidelines for how to select and format data that provides the basis for metadata. After that, I had to find images of it and create view records of the images using the CCO. Then I had to identify related events and create an interactive timeline of events online. Finally, I had to add images of the landmark to the HistoryPin mashup website and create a concept map. The records, images, timeline, concept map, and a link to the landmark on HistoryPin were all included in the final project website.
This project provided invaluable experience in learning how to use technology to present, organize, describe, document, and promote cultural objects. Through this project, I was introduced to a variety of digital resources that can be used to increase engagement and provide additional access to cultural objects. The project also allowed me to gain additional experience in learning how to use CCO to describe objects and create item and image records.Â
