As part of the LIS 60701: Museum Collections course, I had to make a collection and use it to complete several activities throughout the course that were related to collections management. The activities included developing a collection plan, organizing the collection using the Past Perfect museum collections management software, devising a numbering system, preparing a loan form, de-accessioning items, considering ethics and preservation issues, determining fair market value, and proposing a storage system.
Through this collection project, I had the opportunity to become familiar with the Past Perfect museum collections management software and learned valuable collection management skills, such as how to de-accession items, develop a collection plan, devise a numbering system, and prepare loan forms. The project also gave me hands-on experience in applying certain principles, ethics, and skills to actual items in a collection, even if the collection was one which I had created.
