PROJECT: Final Paper: Copyright and Digital Preservation: Current Restrictions and Future Directions
PLO(s):
PLO 2: Critique and synthesize research and identify appropriate research methodologies to solve problems in the field.
PLO 4: Identify and evaluate systems and technologies in order to implement improvements and innovations relevant to a particular information context.
ANNOTATION: This research paper identifies gaps in current copyright laws that restrict preservation and curation actions, and suggests approaches and techniques to address the concerns about copyright infringement. Digital publications, databases, websites, and computer programs present challenges for digital preservation under current copyright restrictions. Content emulation and migration approaches will be compared and contrasted as related to copyright. New digital collecting approaches such web crawling or web archiving may infringe upon authorship rights. Creative Commons licensing is reviewed as a way of broadening the possibilities of digital preservation and alleviating the potential for copyright infringement through digital curation. European, Canadian, and United States copyright law are referenced.
