LCPA’s Art Club has been recruited to paint a new mural in the Cafeteria. The mural is for the new shop that’s being added in the loft. This shop will include apparel and other items.
“I believe that it will be a place to buy cool things,” said Art Club mentor Shellie Kiwelu.“[the mural] will provide school spirit.”
The design itself had mixed feelings since the logo is always a tiger. “I like it. Personally, I think there’s a few too many tigers in the background but it’s Lincoln, we’re Lincoln tigers,” freshman Bella Bui, said.
“I know some students were disappointed because we always see the Lincoln Tiger. Art Club is full of really creative kids who are trying to express new things and their own kind of voice. The Lincoln Tiger was already created so they had to give up a little bit of their creative freedom,” Kiwelu said.
“But I think it’s really good practice painting something together as a group, and it opens doors to be able to do more murals where they have a little bit more creative freedom.”
“I would make it more student-lead, I think there are a lot of good creative minds that are going to work on this,” senior Camille Moore said. “I think that if the students had a little more power to the creativity, it would feel more authentic.”
This isn’t Art Club’s first mural. Last year, Art Club was commissioned to do one in the Northeast Pendleton Heights as part of the neighborhood beautification project. It took a few months to complete and represented the changing seasons. It was a successful project, so this mural won’t be a disappointment. The new mural is designed to inspire the community and beyond.

“Definitely want it to represent our school and lift up school spirit and Kansas City,” Kiwelu said. “Everyone knows Lincoln as a high performing school.”
“It provides, I’d say a nice calming background,” Bui said.
Murals require a lot of process time before going in with paint so staying on track is key for an estimated completion date by the end of October.
“We have it all sketched out and ready to paint, everyone’s been pretty excited about it,” Kiwelu said.
