Pearl Mayanja, learning support specialist, is an alumni of our very own Lincoln College Prep. Mayanja teaches in the Kansas City area, currently working and teaching in the Kansas City area. I got to speak with her about her time as an LCPA student and her career. She graduated from the class of 2005.
Mayanja spoke about what it’s like being a Lincoln alumni, “Because Lincoln is historical in Kansas City, so many people have gone through Lincoln, I think that the legacy that is created there spills over into meeting a network of people.”
Mayanja described her time at Lincoln as “academically driven,” and she noted that her favorite part of this school is the teachers, “I always felt engaged like I was learning.”
Mayanja believes that Lincoln made her a better writer, especially as she has a passion for it to this day.
“I think that I became an excellent writer because it was a requirement for the majority of the classes,” Mayanja said.
Additionally, she added that she has many recollections and encounters, (some easier, and some more difficult), from her time at Lincoln that she’ll take with her and remember forever.
“I have memories there that I will take with me, and experiences. It was also a challenging experience,” Mayanja said.
Mayanja also reminisced about her time being a cheerleader for Lincoln and how she loved meeting people from many different schools.
Her advice to high school students is, “Be involved and find internships. Become connected to what you want to do for work so you can gain experience for the future,” Mayanja said. “Do what you’ve got to do now, so that when you get to college, you know exactly what you want.”
