What is a jewelry designer?

A jewelry designer plans and creates the patterns for rings, necklaces, bracelets and other accessories. They often generate a few prototypes of a product and test the models for durability, comfort and style.

Job responsibilities

The responsibilities of a jewelry designer can vary based on where they work and custom orders. Jewelry designers may be responsible for:

• Drafting designs on paper or with computer software

• Selecting and assessing the quality of gemstones, such as diamonds, rubies and emeralds

• Crafting custom designs

• Cleaning jewelry before distribution by using chemicals and polishing wheels

• Reshaping metal, inserting gems and ensuring the attachment is secure
