Research Projects Highlights and Features
Our Course Directors Dr. Yuntao Wu, Dr. Monique van Hoek, Dr. Fatah Kashanchi, and Dr. Ramin Hakami will lead students to work on the research projects, including but not limited to:
Research Project 1
Cross roads between viruses and extracellular vesicles: common pathways with distinctly different functions (Dr. Fatah Kashanchi).
Kashanchi lab has studied the mechanisms of gene expression in human retroviruses and how these viruses and the host control the fundamental processes needed for viral replication and/or host survival. His lab has extensive experience elucidating the biochemical machinery that drives viral transcription and chromatin remodeling. In recent years, his lab also focused on developing humanized mouse models for both HIV-1 and HTLV-1 infection. Another area of his expertise lies in the area of Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) secreted from HIV-1 and HTLV-1 infected cells. His lab published the first seminal work on HIV-1 exosomes in 2013, showing the presence of non-coding viral RNA in exosomes eliciting an inflammatory response in uninfected recipient cells. Finally, in recent findings, the lab was able to distinguish which particles, EVs or viruses, can first come out of a cell (PMID: 33916140) and utilizing multiple methods, they have shown that viral particles are present as large, medium, and very small particles (PMID: 38978287).
Research Project 2
Use HIV to against HIV, a Trojan horse approach for a functional cure of HIV infection (Dr. Yuntao Wu)
HIV infection can progress to AIDS if left untreated, but current antiviral treatments known as antiretroviral therapy (ART) have made significant strides in managing the virus. ART typically targets key viral proteins, including reverse transcriptase, integrase, protease, Gag, and Env proteins. These drugs effectively reduce viral load and improve the quality of life for those living with HIV; however, they do not eliminate viral reservoirs in the body, leading to the need for lifelong treatment. In light of these challenges, Dr. Wu's laboratory is innovating a novel therapy that utilizes HIV-like pseudo-virus to stimulate the immune system, encouraging the body to self-manage and control HIV. This approach aims to harness the body's own defenses to potentially eliminate the virus more effectively than traditional ART. Dr. Wu will teach key principles of current HIV cure research, elucidating the scientific rationale. He will also address the various hurdles faced in achieving a functional cure for HIV, including issues related to viral persistence and immune evasion, as well as the potential benefits that new therapeutic strategies like his could offer. This could pave the way for bring us closer to a functional HIV cure.
George Mason University researchers lead breakthrough study to find functional cure for HIV
Research Project 3
Antimicrobial Resistant bacteria, AI-based development of Antimicrobial peptides (Dr. Monique van Hoek)
In light of the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance, new approaches to tackling these bacteria are needed. Antimicrobial peptides are small peptides that can kill bacteria and other microbes. Recent advances in computational methods have allowed scientists to design new antimicrobial peptides and predict whether they will be anti-bacterial or not. From our lab, we have recently discovered GATR-3, a synthetic antimicrobial peptide derived from a cryptic alligator peptide, and we demonstrated that it has potent activity against multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, a dangerous bacterium that infects chronic, non-healing wounds. Students will learn the application of AI-and ML-based predictor proteins and structural modeling to design novel antimicrobial peptides for different applications. If interested, students could analyze GWAS data for innate immune antimicrobial peptide gene expression as an alternative to peptide design.
Harnessing the Antimicrobial Properties of Komodo Dragon Blood video on YouTube
Research Project 4
Protection against infection by extracellular vesicles (Dr. Ramin M. Hakami)
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are packaged with various biomolecules and regularly released from cells. Dr. Hakami’s lab has shown that during either viral infection or bacterial infection, small EVs released from infected cells activate the innate immune response to protect those cells that have not been infected yet. Therefore, in effect, these EVs act as natural vaccines. Dr. Hakami’s lab has also identified the various molecular mechanisms that are responsible for this protection. Dr. Hakami will teach how EVs are generated by the cell and their general properties, with an emphasis on how they regulate the innate immune response.
Dive into Oceanography! Grades-8th-10th Did you know the Earth should technically be called an Ocean? Covering over 70% of our planet, the world's ocean is Earth’ s biggest habitat. If you are curious and passionate about the ocean, spend a week diving into oceanography! On the first day, you will discover the many early ocean explorers and their contributions to mapping the world, discovering seafloor features, and early oceanographic research on animals.
Case studies of modern scientific expeditions and the fascinating careers available to you as a future oceanographer will also be a focus of our activities and discussions. Each successive day in Dive Into Oceanography will be a deep dive into one of the four disciplines of oceanography: geological, chemical, physical, and biological oceanography. Using many hands-on experiments and demonstrations, students will learn all about the geology of the seafloor, the chemistry of seawater, the mathematics of ocean physics, and the amazing life in the ocean - from the daily vertical migrations of the smallest plankton, the eyebrow-raising flying squids, and the sometimes strange, yet fascinating behaviors of whales!

Jefferson Madison Regional Library for Teens
What's your reading goal this summer? 4 books? 6 books? a book a week?
College professors at top tier universities are worried--because very few high school graduates are reading books independently (outside of school). They find themselves overwhelmed by the reading lists assigned by colleges and unprepared to keep up with the pace of learning. And these are at the top tier institutions of learning!
Did you know that reading can improve your writing as well as expand your vocabulary? WIN. Reading transports you into the story of someone else, which builds empathy and the ability to appreciate others' points of view. Heck, a great read, it can change your worldview.
Reading grows your brain, cognitively, in ways we don't yet fully understand (but appreciate nonetheless). It can destress you and reduce anxiety. It can improve your focus and attention. Reading groups (like the ones at your local public library) can connect you with other teens. If I could choose one thing that my students do this summer to expand their minds--it would be reading. A lot. Daily. Be a reader.
Includes Book Clubs, Teen Advisory Board and more! What's your reading goal this summer? 4 books? 6 books? a book a week? Join a book club to keep you motivated or create one with friends. Get to know your local library system--Jefferson Madison Regional Library. They are FREE and OPEN to the public.
Democracy in Dialogue--a virtual youth exchange program
Democracy in Dialogue, a Smithsonian-sponsored youth exchange program (in collaboration with Virginia Discovery Museum here in Cville) brings together students from across the country to explore the principles and practice of community through storytelling, collaboration, and civic engagement. This unique opportunity empowers high school students to share their perspectives, learn from one another, and create digital projects that reflect their understanding of values in their own communities. Through dialogue and creative expression, participants will build connections, deepen their civic awareness, and contribute to a national conversation about what community means today.

Young Diplomats/Economists Discussion Group at AHS
Are you an AHS student looking to go into the diplomatic corps, study international relations, comparative politics, or macroeconomics? Are you looking to learn more about international politics or just become more familiar with what's going on in the world with more depth?
We have a discussion group of serious scholars that meets every other week during Patriot Period Wednesday to discuss a different country through both a geopolitical and economic lens. Students need to prepare for each discussion by pre-reading a set of assigned podcasts, educational videos, and readings (all with a global lens/no domestic politics). Thus far, we've studied Venezuela, Eritrea, Turkey, Sweden, Norway and Zimbabwe and explored economic concepts like capitalism and the gini-factor.

Since 2012, TechGirls has trained and mentored 653 teenage girls. Initially, the TechGirls program focused on countries in the Middle East and North Africa. In the summer of 2022, the TechGirls program expanded globally, engaging a talented cadre of STEM-minded young women from the United States and select countries in all six regions of the world (Western Hemisphere, Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Eurasia, East Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, and South and Central Asia).
The core of the TechGirls program is a 24-day experience in the United States. In partnership with Virginia Tech, participants engage in an interactive tech camp that provides an in-depth examination of cutting-edge technologies and various educational and professional paths in STEM fields. Then, TechGirls travel to a city around the USA (Austin, Chicago, Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit, or Seattle) for community immersion and STEM career exploration. The TechGirls programming yields a multiplier effect as participants return home to conduct community-based projects with seven months of mentorship. Applications are open now and close in January.

CARELab—The CARE Lab workshop, will happen from July 15-28
*this program is in it’s first year and so I don’t have any reviews
CARE Lab will be hosted at Vault Virginia, the co-working and event space adjacent to Water Street and the Downtown Mall in the heart of Charlottesville: a savvy, safe, comfortable and convenient location - literally and figuratively a very cool place to learn about entrepreneurship and leadership and "put it to work" in our community during mid- to late-July for local students
CARE Lab is now actively recruiting rising high school sophomores as well as rising juniors and seniors – an expansion of the target demo – and we remain flexible. Reach out to carelabinformation@gmail.com with specific inquiries: students doing alt education, gap year, and younger college-aged candidates may be a good fit as well
Fees reduced: a generous donor has allowed the 40-hour, 2-week immersive workshop to lower its tuition to $1500
Workshop sign ups extended through June 30: students and parents can initiate via the contact/registration form to begin onboarding anytime, and delay registration completion through the end of June. Link to the CARE Lab pages online and scroll down, complete the contact form, and CARE Lab will follow up
The CARE Lab team, lead by their interns, AHS students Brooke Blankenship and Avery Bruen, presented at CBIC/CIC's E2 gathering this morning! They did an amazing job presenting and handling audience questions and feedback. Watch some video excerpts here and view presentation details here

Iowa Young Writers
In person or virtual
In person: Every summer we offer both in-person and online versions of the 2-week Summer Residential Program. The summer 2024 in-person and online programs will run concurrently from June 16-29, 2024 (Session 1) and again from July 14-27, 2024 (Session 2). Students at the Summer Residential Program will spend 2 weeks deeply immersed in the art and craft of creative writing. Each student will take one core course for the duration of the session. The core courses are taught by graduates of the renowned Iowa Writers' Workshop. Students may select a core course in fiction writing, poetry writing, or creative writing (which includes some combination of fiction, poetry, and personal essay). We also offer core courses in TV writing and playwriting. Students will share their writing with teachers and peers, receive constructive critique, and participate in writing exercises and activities. To supplement the core courses, we'll also offer readings by exciting published writers; workshops on process and aspects of craft; discussions on writing-adjacent subjects (literary translation, film, revision, mental health); collaborative projects to allow small groups of students to work together; as well as open mics, talent shows, icebreakers, and social gatherings designed to give students the opportunity to connect with one another.
The Iowa Young Writers' Studio offers 6-week online creative writing courses for high school students twice every year! We offer the online courses for 6 weeks every winter, mid-January through late February, and every summer, late June through early August. We do not offer online courses in the fall. We accept applications in September and October for winter courses and in March and April for summer courses (check this page for updated information). We accept applications from students in the United States and welcome applications from abroad. We accept applications from 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Students must be able to read and write in English. The online courses run independently of the Summer Residential Program, and though they're intended for students with a passionate interest in writing, admissions decisions for these courses are based less on writing ability than on enthusiasm and commitment to learning.
Apply by April. Note that courses run next winter as well!

The 2023 – 2024 competition theme is Economics of Work
“The Federal Reserve has a dual mandate to promote maximum employment and price stability. These goals are intrinsically linked—price stability is essential to sustaining maximum employment over the long term and for the economy to reach its full potential.” – John C. Williams, President and Chief Executive Officer.
Work and employment are key economic drivers with impact ranging from the well-being of individual households, families, and towns to the stability and growth of nations. The types of work that people do and how they work shift and evolve over time to raise countless questions about workforce characteristics, mobility, and agility. Different views of the nature of work can inform a wide variety of policies and outcomes.

The Coolidge Scholarship--Current AHS Juniors
The Coolidge Scholarship is an annually awarded, full-ride, presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. The Coolidge may be used by recipients at any accredited college or university in the United States. Anyone of any background, pursuing any academic discipline of study, may apply to this non-partisan, need-blind, program.
Students apply for the Coolidge Scholarship during their junior year of high school. Finalists are flown in for a finalist weekend at the Coolidge Historic Site in Plymouth Notch, Vermont where they interview with the Coolidge Scholars Finalist Jury. Recipients of the Coolidge Scholarship are notified of their award late in their junior year, before college application (note: current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). Finalists who are not named Coolidge Scholars are eligible to receive a smaller, one-time, college scholarship.
Calvin Coolidge worked hard in academics; the young New Englander’s only sport was public speaking, often on public policy. The main criterion that distinguishes Coolidge Scholars therefore is academic excellence. Secondary criteria include: demonstrated interest in public policy; an appreciation for the values Coolidge championed; as well as humility and service. https://coolidgescholars.org/about/ Deadline: January 18, 2024
