Pair DBQ Historical Thinking Skills with Non-Written sources (maps, artifacts, architecture) as an alternative to reading passages!
Challenges students to develop and analyze their own sources as they study each civilization or through the lens of a topic that interests them (like construction).
Attach the tearables to sticky notes to mark up a textbook.
Increase participation by having students raise a tearable notecard into the air (as you lecture/video).
Create a team challenge.
*This is not an introductory assignment--use after Quarter 1, after you have done class examples of each aspect of historical thinking.
Analysis of Sources:
-Topic Sentence: Introduce the Source and the Context (of civilization/time-period)
-include 2-3 facts from the source that prove your thesis. describe what you see as though I can't see the map/object
-explain how each fact relates to the historical skill
Using Jam Board to Analyze Sources in History (contact me for details--Jam doesn't let me embed here, but this works REALLY well--much better than "bucketing" IMO)
For more history GRAPHIC templates like this one, check out Mrs. Byers History (@MrsByersHistory) and Amanda Sandoval History (I just modified/simplified)--this one is from @historysandoval and we are loving it!

If you have students who are struggling with auditory processing in Zoom (aka: understanding you/you sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher to them…), you can ENABLE automatic CLOSED-CAPTIONING IN GOOGLE SLIDES. And it works REALLY WELL! Here’s a 2-minute video on how to do that in Google Slides. (Note: Zoom doesn’t do live closed captions like this).

“I saw a lot of good thinking and research being done. A lot of students really got into how quads are used in sports. I saw them playing with equations in demos so they can get a good “real life” equation for balls traveling 400+ feet in baseball for instance...I love these choices for the choice board. Fun and relevant. 😊Thank you very much!!!" Mr. BM
"Wow! It’s beautiful! It's amazing, thank you! Shout out to Ms. Newman--I reached out to her to help build my ESOL Algebra I Team a way to share resources and vocabulary." Mrs. MM

“The students loved the choice-board. I got so many great stories that we’ll now weave in throughout the year. Thanks so much.” Mr. CAC
"Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for all your support and resources! I love that doc analysis form you sent over yesterday and will definitely be using it! It was so nice to talk yesterday – I’m glad you suggested it! I am deeply grateful for your time and your encouragement 😊 It was inspiring to hear how much success you’ve had engaging kids with sources, and I am energized by all of these AMAZING ideas and resources! I just spent time looking through all of the incredible stuff you sent over yesterday - the Confucianism Jamboard, the advice Flipgrid, and all of the abridged sources. A “thank you” doesn’t feel sufficient! These are all super usable and accessible for my kids and I will definitely be putting them to use. I’ll be in touch about how things are going and if I could use some extra DBQ help. You’re the BEST " Ms. TM
Thank you so much Holly! This was wonderful! I appreciate your support and look forward to using this assignment this upcoming semester. I love the idea of a PBL but maybe next year after I give this journaling a go. Thanks again for your help! Ms. JB
"The choice board went very well. Students struggled a little at first finding prompts to go with the content but it was mostly because their brains were out of practice! 😉 They quickly got the hang of it and students are making some really good connections!"
"Your India, China Japan unit is awesome! We're using every part of it!" CAC and TM
