I feel I am first an educator who can only succeed if my students succeed. I specialize in the technique known as physical education. I help students to discover that they really are the authors of their own destiny and that they are this Nations most valuable natural resource. They are the future! They are the creators of tomorrow and the keepers of yesterday. Through the physical education program I can tie in the significance of the core classes and other programs that are being promoted by the school as well as the importance of planning ahead for college.
Physical education is a natural environment for students of all ages to develop and progress through the four quadrants of the rigor, relevance and relationships Model, and Blooms Taxonomy. It provides an environment where inclusion, differentiation, and integrating the curriculum is a natural part of instruction and provides an abundance of opportunity for service learning and community service which can affect all ages and abilities of a given community while providing opportunities for students to learn the essential skills to become community leaders and good citizens.
Physical education provides students the environment and opportunity to develop problem solving skills and the ability to be able to strategize about what is needed to be individually successful as well as succeed in a small or large group, and in many different situations. It helps students develop physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually which is the foundation needed to motivate students to want to learn academically.
Through a good physical education program, students develop friendships that are based on mutual trust and respect and help them to feel safe at their school developing within them a desire to want to come to school. While developing the ability to respect the rights of others and a desire to want to help others, they can develop and improve their own self concept and concrete a positive self image for themselves. As students challenge themselves physically in a progressively challenging curriculum and are successful they start to feel more motivated to want to succeed by taking on a more rigorous curriculum.
When life skills are taught as part of a physical education curriculum, the seeds of life long activities that are physically challenging, fun and personally rewarding become imbedded as part of a person lifestyle of living through all the different stages that a person encounters in their life time as they grow older.
The concepts of Physical Education are not limited to the fields, courts, gyms, or pools. They are equally as effected as a way to make learning fun for students in the core classes. One example is using a parachute as a prop for a pre-test. Students have index cards on their shirts with different answer to a question. When the question is called out (1/8 x 3/20=) Students with the correct answer go under the parachute while others make waves.
Learning can be challenging, productive and fun, the Physical Education Way.
