Apprenticeships are unique long-term training programs that allow job seekers to learn specialized skills from various trades.  It's a combination of on-the-job training (OJT) and related classroom instruction under the supervision of a journey-level trade professional.  Apprentices receive hands-on experience and apply classroom lessons to their trade.  After completing the apprenticeship program, the graduates become skilled trade workers.  

In Hawaii, there are 67 apprenticeship programs available that represent a wide variety of occupations.  After completing training, an apprentice becomes a journeyworker.  Journeyworkers can earn a substantially higher salary as well as pursue career goals of becoming an apprentice supervisor, contractor, or even set up your own business.

How do I join an apprenticeship program?

With the large number of apprenticeship programs available in Hawaii, there are no set standards for all apprenticeships.  However, most programs have the following minimum requirements:


How long will I be in the program before I become certified?

Length of time varies depending on the specific program and their union requirements.  Most apprenticeship programs are three to five-years of on-the-job training and related classroom instruction.  After successfully completing an apprenticeship program, you will graduate as a State and Federally recognized craftsperson in your chosen craft.
