Aloha, please check out the Excellence Modules website. Within the site, there are eight learning modules created OCID, the Office of Student Support Services (OSSS) and the Office of Talent Management (OTM). The purpose of the modules is to help provide ongoing professional development in the area of blended and distance learning. Each module recording is about 1-hour in length and provides strategies and tips that you can can utilize in your own classroom.
The first phase or step in establishing a virtual learning system is to make a choice on a course management system. The following platforms, Google Classroom and Seesaw, are two HIDOE sponsored platforms that have been commonly used in our complex. Seesaw has been reported to be an effective platform for students in grades K-2. The HIDOE has other sponsored platforms. If you would like to review the other platforms, please click on the following link.

Frameworks are critical in guiding professionals in their actions and serve as a supporting backbone of teaching practices. There are many frameworks that inform on distance learning. However, the following frameworks, the SAMR Framework (Puentedura, 2012) and Action Research (Burns, 2016; Cochran-Smith, M., & Lytle, S., 2009), are evidence based frameworks you can use to guide you with your distance learning planning. Moreover as stated in the Danielson Framework for Effective Teachers, Distinguished Teachers systematically “seek out opportunities” to develop professionally and conduct action research (Danielson, 2007, p. 105).
In order for teachers to make appropriate learning goals, gauge the learning progress of their students (student growth and understanding), assessments must be conducted. However, please note that there are many forms of assessment. One critical aspect in the assessment process, is to gather information that exhibit student performance/student learning. Additionally and equally important is providing students with constructive feedback so they can be engaged in their own learning process. As a result, students will then be able to engage in self-assessment and be able to offer their peers feedback as well. A useful tool/feature in distant learning applications is the commentary section. In the commentary section, teachers can give students specific feedback. Peers can also give each other feedback. These virtual environments give opportunity for teachers and peers to highlight positive elements and offer constructive suggestions. Please note, feedback can be in form of texts, images, video, or audio formats. Thus, helping student become active, socially interactive, and self-directed in their learning process helps foster a reciprocal learning environment (Simonsmeier, Peiffer, Flaig, & Schneider, 2020). The following offers some helpful information and tips for you to keep in mind as you identify methods of assessing your students and giving feedback.
Synchronous learning is online or distance education that happens in real time, whereas asynchronous learning occurs through online channels without real-time interaction. Many hybrid learning models will include a blend of both asynchronous and synchronous online learning.
In this phase you will be offered various tips, add-ons and plug ins and links to building your virtual Professional Learning Network. If you can't find what you want, just search the web for your ideas (e.g. "polling students in google classroom", "add Youtube videos to Google Classroom", etc.) Edutopia is an excellent resource for teachers of all grade-levels!
