“Every student every day will feel and sound like a fluent reader.”
BKM complex area has trained K-2 teachers at Haiku, Kahului, Kihei, Kula, Puu Kukui, Pukalani, Pomaikai, Makawao, Waihee and Wailuku Elementary Schools in ECRI Foundational Skills.
ECRI makes reading instruction more effective for students at both Tier 1 and Tier 2 intervention levels by enhancing Wonders curriculum through a focus on critical content, being clear and systematic, and providing deliberate and frequent practice.
Enhanced Core Reading Instruction Foundational Skills training provides professional development for interventionists, teachers, and leadership personnel on the explicit teaching routines in the foundational skill areas of phonemic awareness, phonics and word recognition, decodable text reading, fluency and dictation. These routines are designed to be taught in a specific way, using consistent language and following the same procedures each time the routine is used. In addition, teachers are provided with coaching and support to ensure a high level of implementation. Teachers also participate in grade level professional learning teams to analyze student work and identify critical skills to address during small group differentiated instruction.
Additionally, the ECRI Vocabulary and Comprehension training provides instructional routines for active engagement, specific word instruction and for comprehension instruction of basic recall of story elements and details during the first reading of narrative and information text.
