Q: When are the redistricting plans expected to happen?
A: The new boundaries would be in effect for the 2025-26 school year.
Q: What are the actual borders of the school districts?
A: Attendance boundary maps are posted on the Department’s website at hawaiipublicschools.org. From the main menu, click on Enrollment, then Find Your School. Use the SchoolSite Locator App tool. The new redistricting boundaries have not yet been applied to these maps.
Q: Does this apply to Lahaina students? We're currently in FEMA housing in Wailuku but kids attend Maui High School.
A: Your students can be exempted to stay at the school they are currently attending.
Q: Does this redistricting take into consideration the new DHHL subdivision in Waikapu?
A: Yes.
Q: Will younger siblings be allowed to attend the same school as older siblings?
A: Yes, younger siblings can apply the redistricting exemption to stay at their current elementary school with their older siblings.
Q: My son is currently at Baldwin High under a GE. Will he be able to stay?
A: Yes. Redistricting does not impact students already attending a school on a GE.
Q: My child is established at their school. Will they be able to finish?
A: Yes. The redistricting exemption allows them to finish through the final grade of their current school.
Q: Do I need to file for exemption every year?
A: No. An exemption is honored through the last grade level at that school.
Q: What happens to kids with existing exemptions?
A: They can remain at their current school through the final grade.
Q: Will younger siblings of students currently on a GE be allowed to apply for a GE in the next 1-3 years?
A: Yes, as long as there is a sibling still attending the school.
Q: My kid goes to Iao and it says he can continue and finish at Iao but cannot go to Baldwin. Why not?
A: Baldwin and Maui High will work with families on GEs so your child can attend Baldwin.
Q: If a high school student follows new redistricting lines, will CTE classes be honored?
A: CTE credits transfer, but availability of specific courses may vary. Contact the school for details or apply for a GE.
Q: What is the plan for bus service?
A: School bus service will be provided for eligible students based on distance and driver availability.
Q: Will students lose access to transportation if redistricted?
A: If they enroll in a new school and qualify, they will have access to bus service.
Q: Can you mitigate traffic congestion at Pōmaikaʻi?
A: We will work with Pōmaikaʻi on a traffic mitigation plan. Bus service will be available to eligible students.
Q: If we live at The Bluffs, where do our kids go?
A: The Bluffs will continue to attend Maui Waena and Maui High.
Q: We live in Waikapu Gardens. What school will my grandson attend?
A: Waikapu Gardens, Waiale ʻElua and Kaulana Mahina have been redistricted to Pōmaikaʻi, Maui Waena and Maui High.
Q: Do you mean north or south of Kuikahi Dr?
A: South includes Waikapu Gardens, Waiale ʻElua and Kaulana Mahina. North includes Kaimana, Halemalu, Kehalani Gardens, Nanea, Olena, Hale Makana and Ka Hale A Ke Ola.
Q: Will 4th graders be allowed to finish at their current school?
A: Yes, via the redistricting exemption.
Q: Will our son be able to stay? What about his brother in two years?
A: Yes, with the exemption.
Q: Where will students from Olo Place go?
A: Olo Place will continue at ʻĪao Intermediate and Baldwin High.
Q: What are the plans for new school construction in Central Maui?
A: A new central elementary and middle school are in the planning process.
Q: Can legislators help move these plans forward?
A: Legislators have allocated funds for a new school in Waikapu Town. Timelines are still being determined.
Q: Will Puʻu Kukui be expanded?
A: The Hawai‘ i State Department of Education has no current plans to expand the Puʻu Kukui campus.
Q: How will schools monitor false addresses?
A: Proof of residency is required and verified during registration.
Q: Will the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) penalize players if they follow new lines?
A: The MIL will follow the transfer policy, which should not penalize players due to the redistricting.
Q: Why not redraw boundaries for Wailuku/Waiheʻe instead of including Maui High and its feeder schools?
A: Although enrollment has declined in some areas, Puʻu Kukui is still over capacity. ʻĪao and Maui Waena are also at capacity.
Q: What about classroom sizes with added students?
A: Principals are planning accordingly and staffing will be adjusted.
Q: How does this redistricting ensure socioeconomic equity?
A: Socioeconomic status was not a determining factor. Key considerations were student numbers, school capacity, and future developments.
Q: What about Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) concerns for students being separated from long-time peers?
A: Impacted schools will work with families on GEs to support continuity and emotional well-being.
