Read the three  historical novels by Robert Harris on Cicero’s life - Imperium, Lustrum and Dictator. You will be reading a Cicero speech as part of the literature course so this is directly relevant.


Read a general history of Rome (Mary Beard's SPQR and Tom Holland's Dynasty are both very good.


Read A. Wallace-Hadrill’s little book on Augustus.


Read Virgil’s Aeneid book 2 in translation. The Penguin translation (by David West)

of Virgil’s Aeneid is highly recommended.
