Overview

The Contra Costa County Domestic Violence Unit is a team of experienced attorneys and investigators. We use a multidisciplinary approach—meaning we work closely with law enforcement, counselors, and community experts—to prosecute cases involving patterns of harmful or controlling behavior.

Domestic violence does not discriminate. It affects people of every race, gender, age, religion, and economic status. Our office reviews investigations from local police to decide if criminal charges can be filed. All charging decisions are made by an experienced prosecutor.

What is Domestic Violence?

It is more than just physical assault. Domestic violence is a systematic pattern of power and control used by one partner against another. This can include:

• Physical Assault

• Threats & Stalking

• Sexual Abuse

• Emotional Abuse

• Economic Control

• Mental Intimidation

California Statistics:

Approximately 33% of women and 27% of men in California experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime. Early intervention is critical to preventing these cases from escalating, as many domestic violence incidents involve the use of weapons.
