Dear Parent / Carer

Welcome to our first newsletter of the new academic year.

We extend a warm welcome to all our new students at The John Warner School, especially the Year 7s and 12s, who are starting an exciting new phase of their education. It has been wonderful to see how well the new Year 7s have adapted to the challenges of secondary school life, and it's great to witness their increasing confidence as they settle in.

We had a fantastic start to the term with our Prize Giving Evening, celebrating the achievements of our students and the school from last year. This year’s Open Evening was a hugely successful event, with a lot of interest in the school. Many families took the opportunity to visit and see the facilities we have to offer. Fortunately, the weather was also much kinder to us than last year! The feedback we have received has been unanimously positive, and I would like to thank the large number of students who were involved and helped out during the evening. They were a credit to themselves and represented the school exceptionally well. We are extremely lucky to have such an excellent student body.

Parents and carers play a vital role in ensuring that every one of our students attends school regularly, arrives on time, and works hard. There is a very strong correlation between attendance, attainment, and progress, and we will work closely with parents and carers to support their child(ren) in achieving high levels of attendance. At The John Warner School last year our top 20 highest attaining students at GCSE had an average attendance of 97.3%.

Looking ahead, we are excited about the many opportunities this academic year will bring. Together, as a school community, we can motivate and inspire out students to achieve their best.

Prize-Giving Evening

Congratulations to the many students invited to our annual Prize-Giving Evening on Thursday, 5 September.

It was lovely to celebrate their academic, sporting, and creative successes alongside their families and friends.

We are incredibly proud of everything our students have accomplished; the awards received are well-deserved and a testament to their commitment and effort. It’s always inspiring to see our students shine and reach new heights, and this evening was no exception.

Thank you to those who attended; it was a beautiful celebration.

Year 6 Open Evening

On Wednesday, 18 September, the school hosted its annual Open Evening for students wishing to join us in September 2025.

A special mention goes to Artun and Joe for their wonderful piano performances, which added a joyful energy to the evening, and to Ollie and Ava, who courageously took the stage to share an incredibly articulate and personal account of their experiences of school life.

This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of all our departments, staff, and tour guides.

Year 7 Introductory Evening

On Thursday, 26 September, we were delighted to welcome the parents of our new Year 7 students to the school. Mr Price addressed the parents, followed by an opportunity for them to meet with form tutors. We were also grateful to have external support from the HABS team and our local MHST team, who provided valuable information to the parents. Additionally, they had the chance to speak with Miss Haddock about the 'Passport to Sport' award and Miss White, our school SENCO.

We are incredibly pleased with the positive start our Year 7 students have made in their journey at The John Warner School, and we look forward to celebrating their achievements in the years to come.

PE UPDATES

OPEN EVENING

It was a busy evening at school, especially in the PE department. Our Year 7 and Year 8 Interhouse football competitions took place, with teams from each tutor group in both year groups participating in a round-robin format. Each tutor group played against one another, and the eventual winners were Turing House in both year groups.

The Year 7 and 8 girls participated in a netball coaching session, organised and run by two of our Year 12 OCR Sports students. The girls worked on a range of skills and tactics throughout the evening.

PE CLUBS AND PRACTICES

All PE clubs have been running successfully since the start of term. A new club that started this year is the cheerleading club for Year 7 and Year 8 girls, and it has proven to be very popular on Tuesday afternoons after school.

CROSS COUNTRY

Following a successful 'mob race' for our Year 7 students, all of the cross-country teams took part in the first league race of the year at Leventhorpe School. Results will not be known until all three league races have taken place, but there were some exceptional performances from individuals across all year groups in the first race, and we hope to be in contention for medals at the end of the cross-country programme.

To Mrs Halley and the history department at John Warner

I realise this may come a bit out of the blue, but I’ve been wanting to contact you and all the history teachers at John Warner for a while, and just haven’t got around to it!

I hope you are all doing well, and have had a restful summer; I can’t quite believe where the time has gone - how are we in year 12 now!?

I just wanted to let you know how I got on in my History GCSE - so much of it was down to you, Miss Barnes and Miss Croft for putting up with me for all of those years so I thought you should know and take plenty of the credit you deserve.

I managed to get a grade 9, with 167/168 marks across all of the papers (medicine, nazi Germany, Elizabeth and the Cold War) - I still can’t quite believe it, but you should know that I used my John Warner history books for a majority of my revision. Also, if you could pass on a large thank you to Mrs Barnes for giving me so many resources for the Elizabeth paper before I left, that would be much appreciated.

Again, I want to say a huge thank you to all of you there, I’ve now gone on to do History, Spanish and Maths at A Level, and am whole-heartedly considering a degree in History and potentially Modern Foreign Languages at uni. Thank you for your consistent help and hard work at John Warner; as a department you gave me a love for history and without you all I never would’ve thought of doing what I am today!!

I hope that you are all well, and that you enjoy the rest of term and the sunshine this week - keep doing the amazing work that you are doing.
