The John Warner Reading Journey has continued to flourish with more reading interventions opening up with year 8s and continuing with our year 7s and 9 cohorts. Students have been engaged with improving their reading skills resulting in many more students consistently reading more regularly, both at home and school; thank you for all your support with your child's journey!
There is a book to suit everyone so please keep encouraging your child to persevere with their blossoming reading skills.
Don't forget that newspaper, magazines, online articles, blogs are all really good places to broaden their interests and ideas.
Here are some reading and comprehension strategies to help your child at home:
ask your child to read aloud to you;
question your child's understanding by asking the 4 Ws: who is the text about? What is it about? Where is it set? When is it set?
ask them to predict what they think might happen next;
ask if they can summarise or identify key points;
talk me through what you've just read;
draw me a picture of your favourite scene;
read to a sibling and ask them to summarise to your sibling;
remind your child how to sound out a tricky word phonetically where possible.
Good luck and please do let us know how you get on. Your child could write a brief review of their book for our wall display and achieve an R3 in the process...coming soon!
