At The John Warner School, our reading journey has been growing in strength gaining traction over the last two years. The Reading Fluency Programme is designed to support struggling readers to make swift and dramatic gains in their reading attainment. Through the combined use of evidence-informed reading strategies and high-quality texts, the Reading Fluency Project not only increases the number of students working at age-related expectations in reading, but fosters enthusiastic, confident readers who show increased pleasure and skill when reading challenging texts across the curriculum.
Our implementation of RFP has seen a significant improvement in the reading ages of our students across the year groups and more recently, with our year ten students who after attending the full 8-week programme, have seen a dramatic improvement to their reading ages. RFP is a continuous rolling programme throughout the academic year for any student requiring support with their reading skills.
Little Wandle is a phonics programme validated by the Department for Education. The three programmes: Start the Code, Grow the Code and Complete the Code, target students with phonics gaps in their reading ability. It provides an evidence-informed approach to enhance reading outcomes for Key Stage 3 students. The Year 7 delivery model is aligned with the Little Wandle pedagogy, grounded in research on optimal methods for children to learn to read.
Many of our Year 7 students are enjoying a weekly reading session led by some of our sixth form students in our beautiful library setting. Sixth formers are using their leadership skills to engage their partnered Year 7 students.
Students took part in various reading and writing activities in lessons as well as competitions led by our Librarian. Book tokens were handed out on the day giving student an opportunity to receive £1 off their chosen book at a store or the library led book-fayre
Assemblies were held for all year groups exploring the importance of our reading heritage and the country's second oldest library belonging to Oxford University; The Bodleian Library. Some of you may recognise this library having been used for the floating book scene in the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
The Carnegie Club is a national (and international) reading for pleasure initiative; the Carnegie Shadowing Scheme engages thousands of children and young people in reading the books on the shortlist. This prestigious club is run by our librarian in the school library once a week. Our 'elite' readers are invited to participate and attend.
Each year, young people who take part in the scheme are invited to vote for their favourite books to win the Shanowers’ Choice Awards, which are announced alongside the Medal winners at the annual winners’ ceremony.
The Medals are awarded annually by CILIP, the library and information association and the Youth Libraries Group with longlists announced in February, shortlists in March and the winners announced at a ceremony in June.
The shortlist for 2025 are:
Finally, it is wonderful to see how many of our young people are beginning and continuing to enjoy their reading journeys at The John Warner School.
