Lombok is a land of contrasts. From the quiet, mangrove-fringed reefs of Gili Asahan to the rolling surf of Selong Belanak, this trip explores two distinct sides of island life.
A remote, tranquil island. Accommodations are eco-focused. The water is calm, clear, and rich in biodiversity (mangroves & reefs). Note: Rustic "island life" vibe.
A wide, sandy bay famous for gentle, beginner-friendly waves. Safe, soft sandy bottom (no sharp reef to step on), making it ideal for first-time surfers to build confidence and skills.
Experiential Education
As part of the 'Reef Architects' initiative, students will dive into direct marine conservation by helping to rebuild damaged reef ecosystems. Working alongside local conservationists on the Gili Asahan house reef, students will participate in the construction and deployment of hexagonal steel 'spider frames'—structures designed to stabilize the seabed and provide a solid foundation for new life. By attaching live coral fragments to these frames, our students help accelerate the natural regeneration process, leaving behind a growing legacy that increases biodiversity and protects the coastline for years to come.
Lombok is famous for its pearls, and students will gain exclusive access to the floating pearl farms to study this sustainable industry up close. This is not just a tour; it is an active science workshop. The journey begins at a nearby island hatchery, observing how pearl oyster larvae are nurtured and tended to ensure sustainable farming practices. Students will travel to the floating platforms to witness the full lifecycle of the oyster, including the delicate process of bead insertion and pearl extraction.
Our surf session at Selong Belanak is about more than just fun; it is a hands-on lesson in resilience. This beach is famous for its safe, sandy bottom and gentle waves, making it the perfect classroom for beginners. Students learn quickly that falling is just part of the process. The real goal isn't just standing up on the board, but finding the determination to paddle back out and try again. It is a simple, powerful experience in building confidence through action.
Service Learning
Addressing the critical challenge of island waste management, our group will partner with village leaders to upgrade their local recycling facilities. This project is a model of true collaboration: while professional village builders construct the structural frames and roof, JIS students will learn the traditional craft of weaving split bamboo to create durable, waterproof walls for the center. This hands-on contribution directly combats the plastic waste issue threatening the island, providing the community with the essential infrastructure needed to process marine debris and keep their environment pristine.
Bridging cultural gaps through the universal language of curiosity, our 'Science Spark' program sees JIS students stepping into the role of mentors and educators. Visiting the local village school, our students will facilitate an immersive 'Science Games Day,' leading interactive experiments and activities designed to spark wonder and critical thinking. This peer-to-peer exchange allows our students to practice leadership and empathy, connecting with local students through shared laughter and the excitement of discovery, effectively transcending language barriers.
