A registered nurse will accompany each trip. (S)he will be certified in First Aid and CPR.
Each nurse will carry an extensive First Aid Kit.
A pre-departure briefing will be held for all ESP nurses, to be conducted by the JIS Health Officer.
The Health Officer will contact each site nurse twice daily throughout ESP to receive a health report and to discuss any potential health/injury issues that may have arisen.
The Health Officer will remain at the JIS Health Office during ESP week and will coordinate nursing support for trips. You may contact her on Ext 11325/81377 if you have health concerns.
Prior to departure, you will be asked to complete the ESP Consent Form (already done for this year), which will assist in our Health Care Planning. If your child has an underlying condition that may require nursing support (eg Asthma), please provide details. Prior to departure, we will cross-check and collate all student health information that we receive. This allows us to be best prepared to provide care for those identified as having a “Medical Alert."
Please remember to update your contact information on JISnet prior to departure in order for us to be able to telephone you if necessary.
If a student requires medication during ESP week, it must be submitted on Passport/Medications Morning. Medication needs to be in the original packaging and should be placed in a plastic/ziplock bag clearly labeled with the student's name, ID number, and Grade level. Together with a signed JIS medication authorization form with clear instructions on dosage and frequency.
For safety reasons, we request that all student medication is handed into JIS, in order for the nurse to accurately administer the prescribed medication to students. Students are not allowed to carry any medication themselves.
The trip nurse will carry any over-the-counter medication in case necessary, and personal medication needs to be handed in on April 14 during Passport and Medication Morning. The nurse will carry and administer all medication.
Plenty of rest and good nutritious food should be encouraged the weekend before ESP week. It will be a busy, exciting, and exhausting week.
Ensure that Immunizations are up to date. In particular, Tetanus (“good” for 10 years).
If your child is going to Bali, consider the pre-exposure to Rabies Vaccination. This is a course of 3 vaccinations (Day 0, 7 and 21) that provides protection from rabies infection should they be bitten by a dog or cat. This is not required for travel, but some people choose to obtain it before travel. We do not plan on purposefully interacting with animals such as wild dogs or monkeys while on ESP. Please contact the Health Officer for further information.
All students should remember to pack a hat, a water bottle, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
Malaria vaccination is not required for any of the ESP trips, as the majority of the destinations fall within low to moderate malaria-endemic areas, and the duration of the trip is relatively short. (Reports from SOS here)
Recommended Prevention: Mosquito bite prevention (use of repellents, like DEET products, nets and clothing)
As always, the final decision remains at the discretion of the parents. Should parents feel it necessary, they are welcome to consult directly with a doctor. Some choose anti-malarial medications; Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone), Doxycycline, Mefloquine (Lariam). Many do not recommend using malaria prophylaxis medication for any of our trips as the benefits and side effects of these medications do not outweigh the risks.
For any student requiring prescription medication during the ESP trip, we kindly ask that you hand in the medication on Medication Day. It is imperative that medication be in its original packaging with clear instructions in English or Bahasa, enabling our nurse to accurately identify and verify each medication. Additionally, we have attached a Medication Authorization Form for your completion and submission along with the medication.
We kindly request that you refrain from bringing any over-the-counter medication, as our nurse will be equipped with these supplies. Please understand that due to logistical constraints, the nurse cannot carry individual medication kits for each student, and students are not permitted to carry their own medication. All medication must be submitted to the nurse, who will administer it accordingly.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me, Michelle, the Health Officer at JIS, at mnoordermeerdegroot@jisedu.or.id.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the safety and well-being of all students during the ESP trip.
Warm regards,
Michelle
