This trip takes place on the island of Batam, just south of Singapore. The Batam View Beach Resort is our base to explore the seaside and the nearby environments. This trip has a great variety of activities on water and on land. Activities will include kayaking, seashore surveys, mangrove planting, forest trek and survival activities in the forest. We will also visit a local kampung to learn about crab fishing and make traditional children's toys with local members of the Batam community.
There is a multidisciplinary curriculum approach to the Batam ESP trip. Before departing, students will identify and research an issue related to sustainability that is evident at a location throughout the trip. While 'in the field,' they will learn about sustainability practices with local community members and assess how tourism directly affects island ecosystems. Students will learn about turtle conservation with a hands-on science activity using scale model turtles to replicate turtle hatching.
Batam students will have the opportunity to explore some jungle species, including many species of birds, and how they interact in the ecosystem, as well as the impacts of human encroachment on their habitats, and the capture of these animals for the illegal animal trade. Mangroves will be explored, learning about their role in protecting island communities from storms, the types of organisms they house and protect, as well as why they are being lost from Indonesia at an alarming rate.
