Fabric of the City's call to action encourages students to learn more about a community through exploring its traditional textiles, fabrics or clothing and why/how they are significant to the community.
Have students bring a piece of fabric or an image that connects to their identity, whether it be from their cultural heritage or another part of their identity that represents a sense of belonging and community for you.
Students may also choose to bring a fabric or choose an image that represents a community they wish to learn more about.
Research:
Students will research the stories behind and around the image/fabric.
Ask them to reflect on why that fabric/image was chosen and how it makes them feel connected to others and/or a particular community?
Create:
This can take many forms, students can create a visual board, do a doodle sketch, or make a poster of their image and their findings and stories.
Fabric of Our Classroom and / or Fabric of Our School
Your class could bring all the fabrics/images together to make a beautiful representation of your classroom. You could assemble them on a foam board which may create a cushion or quilted effect. Then, you can display as a class mural.
