Consider the following:
How would you feel leaving Canada and starting new in a different country?
What challenges would you face?
What important things in your life would you have to give up - would you have to stop speaking English and learn a new language? Would you be able to give up certain traditions you have in Canada?
Have students define legacy & tradition with a dictionary or the internet. Then, consider the following:
What kind of traditions or legacies did your ancestors bring to your family?
What would you want YOUR legacy to be?
What’s the difference between legacy and tradition?
Do you believe the stories of previous generations and communities entering Canada and Edmonton add to the legacy of our city?
Is it important to hear these stories? Why or why not?
Do these past stories help us to know what to change moving forward with future immigrants or refugees?
What do you think Canada’s legacy has been through history when diverse cultures come to our country? Is this legacy positive or negative for our country?
How do you think we can improve upon the legacy in the future?
