HOD: Mr Azgar Amod
Compulsory: No
Does it count for APS: Yes, full points awarded
Required for further studying: Only in study areas that involve biology. In many such study areas, the subject might not be needed for entry into the study area but inarguably provides a sound foundation in that study area. However, there are certain study areas in biology which specifically require biology for entry into the study area viz. microbiology; optometry (certain universities); molecular and cell biology; etc.
Useful for: Health Sciences; Medicine and surgery, nature conservation, veterinary studies, genetics, bioinformatics; biotechnology and genetic engineering; environmental management; microbiology; environmental law; etc.
Practical component: One of the three specific aims of the subject focuses on conducting investigations and this relates entirely to practical work. Such work usually would be conducted in the lab yet is not restricted to the lab entirely. Some work relates to field-based enquiries.
Special requirements/recommendations: The minimum entrance requirement for this subject is a Mathematics average of 50%. Life Sciences is a science and as such it demands a particular attitude and aptitude for the subject. Some qualities of a successful learner in this subject are: good reading and analytical skills, a willingness and commitment to work daily on the subject matter.
More details:
The subject matter is intensive and comprehensive. Life Sciences through grades 10 to 12 is organised into FOUR knowledge areas, viz.
Life at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels
Life processes in plants and animals
Diversity, Change and Continuity
Environmental Studies.
Most biology courses beyond the first year at tertiary level require chemistry as a prerequisite for continued study beyond the first year. This is on account of higher studies in biology delving into processes at the molecular level of existence. This emphasises the scientific nature of this subject.
NOTE: In 2023, Life Sciences will be timetabled with Dramatic Arts. These two subjects may not be taken together.
