Learners must choose one First Additional Language:
Afrikaans First Additional Language OR isiZulu First Additional Language
NOTE: We expect learners to continue with the First Additional Language choice that they studied in the GET phase (grades 8 and 9). As with all language study what is taught in the FET phase builds on the concepts learned in the previous phase.
Learners must choose between:
Mathematics OR Mathematical Literacy
In order to continue with Core Mathematics a learner must achieve a Mathematics average mark that is above 50%.
In August a learner's Mathematics average will be calculated using:
The Mathematics marks obtained in Term 4 of Grade 8 (weighted at 40%)
The Mathematics mark obtained in Term 1 of Grade 9 (weighted at 40%)
The Mathematics mark obtained in Term 2 of Grade 9 (weighted at 20%)
NOTE:
Should a learner select Core Mathematics in August but drop below the 50% threshold in the November calculation, he will be contacted by the Grade Head and informed to move to Mathematical Literacy. (The learner's elective subjects may also have to be re-selected.)
Should a learner select Mathematical Literacy in September and improve his Mathematics above the 50% threshold in the November calculation, he will be contacted by the Grade Head and invited to re-select subjects.
A learner whose Mathematics average does not increase above, or decrease below, a threshold Mathematics average in the November calculation will be expected to remain with the subjects selected in August.
In November a learner's Mathematics average will be calculated by averaging:
The Mathematics marks obtained in Term 3 of Grade 9
The Mathematics mark obtained for Paper 1 in November
The Mathematics mark obtained for Paper 2 in November
