HOD: Mrs Jessica Sutherland
Compulsory: Yes (either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy)
Does it count for APS: Yes, full points awarded. (Some institutions award bonus points for a Maths mark over 60%.)
Required for further studying: This depends on what you plan to study. Traditionally, many university degrees (except for the field of Humanities) require Mathematics, however, there are a number of college courses that do not require Core Mathematics and accept Mathematical Literacy, depending on the institution and programme. Where Mathematical Literacy is accepted, it is often at a specified level of achievement.
Useful for: Although you may not go into a Mathematics-specific career, the problem-solving and logical thinking skills you will learn in Mathematics will assist you throughout your working life. More specifically: engineering, business degrees, medical field, science degrees, architecture, etc.
Practical component: No
Special requirements/recommendations: The minimum entrance requirement for this subject is a Mathematics average of 50%. Learners must have a scientific calculator and a commitment to daily practice.
More details:
Core Mathematics is a language that makes use of symbols and notations for describing numerical, geometric and graphical relationships. It is a human activity that involves observing, representing and investigating patterns and qualitative relationships in physical and social phenomena and between mathematical objects themselves. Mathematics helps to develop mental processes that enhance logical and critical thinking, accuracy and problem-solving that will contribute to decision-making. Mathematical problem-solving enables us to understand the world (physical, social and economic) around us, and most of all, teaches us to think creatively. Core Mathematics caters predominantly to those learners who wish to study in Mathematics-related fields.
It is important to note that a learner needs to achieve above 60% in Core Mathematics to be considered for degree courses that have Mathematics as an entrance requirement. In reality, universities admit that they are receiving 10 applications for every place they have available so we encourage learners interested in courses that list Mathematics as an entry requirement to aim for a Mathematics mark above 70%.
