How can I help my student respect themselves and others on social media?

Understand

Social media (like Tik Tok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter) allows us to connect with others online, but can also provide a space for people to be disrespectful or do other things they shouldn't.

Social Media Test Drive

Practice digital literacy skills in a social media simulation. Train your student before they use social media. Social Media TestDrive modules are designed so that youth can complete them by themselves, but we encourage caregivers to try out and discuss Social Media TestDrive with their learners.

Help Students Make Friends and Interact Safely Online

So much of kids' social lives happens online. Whether they're texting with their study group, flirting on social media, or voice-chatting on game platforms, middle and high schoolers can learn to communicate in safe and healthy ways. These skills will help students -- and the people they're communicating with -- have positive experiences online.

How We Changed Social Media Conflict to Empathy

A lot of energy has gone into preventing students from misbehaving online, but let's be honest: These are kids. They're going to make mistakes. How can we help them when they do?

Communicate

Ask your student the questions below to spark conversation about proper behavior on social media.

K-5

  • How should you treat other people online?

  • What would you do if someone were mean to you online?

  • What does it look like to be "nice" online?

  • What is wrong with being rude online?

6-12

  • What do you do when other people are disrespectful on social media?

  • Why is it important to be respectful on social media? What could happen?

  • What do you know about internet trolls? How do you avoid them and avoid being one?
